Dale Kennedy added to the future of the MSU distance crew Tuesday, when standouts from Manhattan and Washington state signed National Letters-of-Intent to attend Montana State University next fall.
Brian Potter of Manhattan High School joins the program as one of Montana's top prep distance runners. Potter finished second in Class B in the mile (4:23.62) and two mile (9:53.89) in 2005, and last fall was third in the state in cross country, running with a knee injury. He helped lead Manhattan to its first state cross country team title last year, and at last week's Midland Top 10 Meet in Billings posted a career-best time (9:46.56) in winning the two mile, and finished third in the mile.
"Brian is a good athlete and has a lot of room for development," Dale Kennedy said. "He is a really great competitor, he digs down and gets after it. He has good range, and I'm thrilled to death that Brian is joining our program."
Kennedy also signed Nick Atwood of Otis Orchards, Wash. Atwood is a National Honor Society member and ranked first in his class at East Valley High School near Spokane. Atwood owns best marks of 4:22.8 in the mile and 9:25.78 in the two mile this spring, and was eighth in the Class 3A Cross Country Championships last fall.
"Nick will be a tremendous addition to our young distance-running crew," Kennedy said. "I think he will really help right away in cross country because he is so strong at the longer distances. I'm excited for the future of our distance program with the addition of Nick and Brian."
