Montana State tennis standout Federico Ueltschi, ranked No. 102 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, will face No. 15 Arnaud Lecloerec of Virginia Commonwealth in the first-round of the NCAA Men’s Singles Championships, Wednesday at 4 p.m. (MST) in Stanford’s Taube Stadium.
The men’s draw was picked Tuesday night in Stanford, Calif.
Ueltschi, a senior from Mendoza, Argentina, is MSU’s first-ever NCAA singles qualifier. The three-time Big Sky Conference MVP led the Bobcats to its third straight league title and a NCAA appearance against Pepperdine. The Waves defeated the Bobcats 4-0 and went on to win the national championship over Georgia (4-2).
Lecloerec, a junior from Plouhinec, France, garnered ITA All-America honors last season after advancing to the round of 32 at the NCAA Championships. He played at the No. 1 spot for VCU this spring.
“Federico is ready to play,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “He’s played in some big tournaments throughout his career so he knows what to expect. He needs to focus on his strengths and maintain his composure.”
The winner of the Ueltschi-Lecloerec match will face the winner of the Raul Morant-Rivas (Texas A&M Corpus Christi)-KC Corrkey (Stanford) match on Thursday in the round of 32.
