A recent Wyoming state champion and a Washington standout joined the Montana State program recently, Bobcat coach Dale Kennedy announced. Sprinter/hurdler Benjanmin Soukup from Sheridan (Wyo.) High School joins the Bobcat track and field program next year, and Morgan Dunley from Wenatchee (Wash.) High School begins her MSU track career with the cross country team in the fall. Each signed National Letters-of-Intent to attend MSU.
Dunley finished seventh in the Class 4A 800 meters last spring, leading her team to second in the 4x400 relay, and has earned all-conference honors in cross country as a junior and senior and in track as a sophomore and a junior. She owns best marks of 59.5 in the 400 and 2:16.59 in the 800, and has captained her high school track, cross country and basketball teams.
"Morgan has demonstrated real leadership skills and is an excellent student," Kennedy said. "We haven't had a true 800 meter kid with these kinds of credentials in a while. She will participate in cross country right away next fall, and lend depth and support."
Soukup won the Wyoming state 300 meter hurdles championship this spring at 39.28, and finished second in the 110 hurdles with a mark of 14.69, a significant personal best. He also owns a PR of 7.73 in the 55 m hurdles (indoors), and was a hurdles finalist in Pocatello's Simplot Games this winter, the region's top indoor competition. He was the 2005 state 110 champion, and finished third indoors this year, and is a team captain this year.
"We thought we were getting a top-notch high hurdler and it turns out we're getting a kid that is also an outstanding 400 meter hurdler," Kennedy said. "We have not signed someone with these credentials in the hurdles in a long time, and at 6-3, 170, he is the prototype physically for that event. We're excited that Benjamin signed at Montana State."
