Montana State Men’s Tennis Team Ready for Waves

Montana State (15-11) will face No. 2 Pepperdine (30-2), followed by No. 32 TCU and No. 36 San Diego at 2 p.m.. Live stats of both matches will be available at www.pepperdinesports.com.
The Bobcats recently captured its third straight Big Sky Conference title with a 4-0 win over intra-state rival Montana to earn the league’s automatic berth to the national tournament.
“We’re looking forward to the challenge,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips, who garnered his third consecutive Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year honors, last week. “We’ve been here before and we’ve played some of the best teams in the nation, so I don’t expect any surprises or jitters.
“Pepperdine is synonymous with tennis excellence, not only on the west coast, but around the nation, as well.”
Montana State faced Texas A&M in the opening round of last year’s tournament, and two years ago met then No. 4 USC.
MSU will be led by senior Federico Ueltschi. The senior from Mendoza, Argentina is ranked No. 102 in the ITA singles poll. Ueltschi earned his third straight Big Sky Conference MVP accolade after posting a 26-9 mark in singles play, including an 18-6 mark in dual matches.
Also looking to make a contribution on Saturday will be seniors Marek Gebicki, Tejeshwara Chigateri and Jake Berriochoa. Gebicki and Chigateri currently rank No. 2 and 3 on the all-time MSU singles victories chart.
Pepperdine is making its 28th appearance at the NCAA Championship since the 1978 season. The Waves have been national runner-up on two occasions.
The Waves are led by senior Scott Doerner, who is ranked No. 8 in the nation. Doerner, a native of Australia, has also qualified for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship.
Pepperdine also boast two other ranked players in No. 31 Pedro Rico and No. 92 Ivor Lovrak. In addition, the Waves have two doubles teams ranked among the top 50. Rico will also participate in the NCAA Singles Championship.
