Bobcats Ink In-State Track Standouts

Four in-state track and field standouts joined the Montana State program this week, signing National Letters-of-Intent to become Bobcats.
Bozeman's Norm Comfort and Billings West's Nathaniel Neujahr bolster MSU's talented sprint corps, while middle distance standout Brian Ohs of Glendive and Billings Skyview javelin thrower Nick Lam arrive at MSU as among the best in the state at their events.
Comfort finished third in the state in the 200 last year, and posted the state's fifth-fastest time (22.94), and his 10.94 in the 100 was the state's fifth-fastest time. MSU coach Dale Kennedy said he is impressed with Comfort's overall athleticism. "Norm could be a decathlete, he has that body type," said Kennedy. "He has done some throwing and he has good speed, which is pretty much the prerequisite. He played football as a tight end, and played basketball at Bozeman High. I'm really excited about Norm joining our program."
Lam leads the state with a best toss of 208-10 this spring. The MSU coaching staff expects the Skyview product to contribute right away next spring. "With the graduation of Joel Walthall (this spring), Nick will fill a large hole in the javelin squad and joins a promising young group of javelin throwers," said MSU javelin coach Jorah Griffith. "I am very excited to have a thrower of his ability join our program. He will likely make an immediate impact in the Big Sky."
Neujahr finished second in the 100 and 400 meters as a junior last spring, and in spite of owning the fastest 200 time in the state (22.0) wasn't able to compete in the state meet in that event because of a schedule conflict. He owns a best mark of 10.82 in the 100 and 49.81 in the 400. "Nathaniel is a sprinter with very good range," Kennedy said. "He can go all the way from 100 to 400. That is an important factor for us, because with the graduation of Michael Novotney this spring Nathaniel will join the mix in our sprint group next year with Ty (Norris) and Steve (Heberly) and Dan (Johnson)."
Ohs, from Dawson County High, posted best 800 times of 2:02 in 2003, 1:59 in '04, when he finished third in the 800 and mile, and 1:56.9 in '05, when he was sixth in the 800 and 2nd in the mile. "I really like that progress," Kennedy said. "He is improving, and has a lot of upside. Brian was good football player, so he is athletic, and has not trained year-round in track. I think he has a lot of up-side."
Kennedy indicated the Bobcats could have several more signings as the spring progresses.
