Montana State (9-14) opened the match winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Montana rallied winning four of six singles matches to advance to the semifinals on Friday.
The Bobcats won at No. 2 and 6 singles as Nicole Luetolf and Katy Clarke each recorded straight set victories. With the match tied 3-3, UM’s Jonna Schwartz recorded a 2-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 win over Allison Fey at No. 5 singles for the match.
“We fought the whole way but came up short,” said MSU women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “Obviously the loss hurts, but we’ll learn from it and move forward.”
Montana State will lose the services of seniors Clarke and Vera Vasileva, but will return six letterwinners, including four starters.
“We have a good, strong nucleus of young kids and our future is bright,” Albrecht said. “This season we put an emphasis on doubles and we did a fantastic job in that area.”
MSU’s doubles play was led at No. 3 where Fey and freshman walk-on McKenzie Hilmer posted a 9-1 mark, including an 8-5 win over Montana on Thursday.
