Montana State Women’s Basketball Program Adds to Roster

Joining the MSU ranks are Rebecca Mercer, a 5-9 guard from Perth, Australia, and Callie Goff, a 5-9 guard from Oregon City, Ore.
Mercer, who spent the past two seasons at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, North Dakota, was a second-team NJCAA All-America this season, after averaging 21.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game as the Lady Royals notched a 30-5 mark to advance to the national tournament.
“Rebecca is a great shooter and scorer,” Binford said. “She can also penetrate to the basket and get on the foul line. She is a great defender and is a good fit for our program. We’re very excited to have her as a Bobcat.”
Last season, Mercer recorded 83 3-pointers and finished among the top 20 at the NJCAA level in both scoring and three-point makes. In addition, she shot 50 percent from the field and 83 percent from the free throw line.
Mercer was a two-time all-region performer and helped Lake Region to conference, region, and district titles. As a freshman, she garnered region MVP accolades. The Lady Royals posted a 60-9 mark during her tenure at Lake Region.
Mercer was also a two-time all-conference academic choice.
A native of Perth, Australia, Mercer prepped at Kalamunda High School, where she won a state title and advanced to the national tournament.
Goff, who comes to MSU from one of the best girls’ high school programs in the country at Oregon City, averaged 8.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.1 assists per game, while shooting 55 percent from the field.
She helped guide a balanced Pioneers squad to a 25-3 overall mark, a 14-0 conference ledger and a second place finish at the Oregon State tournament.
“Callie is an outstanding competitor,” Binford said. “She is a very strong player and a great athlete. Callie comes from one of the best programs in the country and knows how to win. She can hit the three-pointer and is a good finisher on the inside.”
Goff was a two-time all-league pick as a junior and senior and was a 2005-06 McDonald’s All-America nominee.
Binford indicated that the Bobcats could possibly sign one more student-athlete this spring.
