Montana State Netters Fall at UM

“We had a great run, and one that probably won’t be matched in this conference for a long time,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “Montana is a much improved team and came ready to play. We’ll regroup and get ready for the Big Sky championships next weekend.”
The Bobcats claimed the opening doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. MSU went up 2-0 following Jake Berriochoa’s straight set win at No. 5 singles over Varun Giri. However, Montana answered winning four straight matches for the victory.
Two-time Big Sky Conference MVP Federico Ueltschi closed out the match with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over UM’s Jan Steenekamp at the top spot.
In all, five singles matches either went to three sets or to a tie-breaker.
Montana State, who played the singles matches without No. 2 performer Marek Gebicki, has posted an impressive 22-2 mark in Big Sky play over the past four years.
The Bobcats will be the No. 1 seed at next weekend’s Big Sky tournament in Pocatello, Idaho.
