Proietti Changes Gears

Proietti, who was recruited out of Merced High School to play tennis at San Diego and UC Davis, was a two-year letterwinner for the Bobcat women’s basketball team.
“Although we are sad that she is leaving our program, we’re excited that she is staying at Montana State, and that we’ll get a chance to watch her tennis career,” said Bobcat women’s basketball coach Tricia Binford. “She is an outstanding student and a very competitive athlete.”
This winter, Proietti played in 23 games and averaged 2.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.
“Katy was recruited to play collegiate tennis out of high school by numerous Division I programs,” said MSU women’s tennis coach Denise Albrecht. “She’s a good fit for our program. Katy will need some time to adjust, and eventually, she’ll be a contributor.”
As a senior, Proietti was a Modesto Bee and Merced Sun Star Player of the Year in both basketball and tennis. In addition, she was a four-time conference champion in tennis.
“There were a lot of factors that went into my decision, but it all came down to having an opportunity to play tennis,” Proietti said. “I chose basketball out of high school because there was a limited amount of time for me to continue in the sport, and I knew tennis would always be there. I just felt a pull towards tennis.
“The program at MSU is fantastic,” Proietti said. “The girls on the team are very nice and accepting. Despite being a little rusty, I hope I can help them out.”
Proietti is already practicing with the Montana State tennis squad.
