Sacramento State used a 12-3 run midway through the second half to end Montana State's season and catapult the Hornets to a 71-70 Big Sky Tournament First Round win on Saturday.
All-Big Sky guard DaShawn Freeman sealed Sac State's win with four straight free throws in the waning moments before Ja'Ron Jefferson hit a meaningless three-pointer at the buzzer. The Hornets shot 70% from the line on the afternoon to advance to Big Sky tourney in Flagstaff on Tuesday. MSU hit just 62.5% of its 40 free throws.
"The free throw line is a familiar problem," Bobcat coach Mick Durham said. "It's tough to lose a game at the line. But my hat's off to Sacramento State, they went home and came back and played well."
Neither team enjoyed much separation in a game that was close throughout. Montana State's biggest lead was seven points, including the 53-46 edge at 9:05, while Sac State's biggest advantage was five.
Alex Bausley led the Hornets with 16 points, a figure that could have been much higher but for a 3-for-11 performance from the free throw line. Bausley was the only Hornet to miss a free throw.
Ja'Ron Jefferson led the Bobcats with 12 points, while Marvin Moss scored 10. Jefferson missed a pair of free throws with 2:38 to play and MSU trailing by two. On the next possession, Clark Woods nailed a dagger three-pointer to give Sac its biggest lead and all but end MSU's chances.
