A trio of record-setting Big Sky Conference Champions headline Montana State's 2006 Indoor Track and Field Award winners, according to MSU coach Dale Kennedy.
Pentathlete Erin Jones-Graf and pole vaulter Ellie Rudy, along with weight thrower Josh Henigman, dominated their respective events like no others in Big Sky history, and the Bobcat program rewarded the three with athlete of the year award. Rudy and Jones-Graf share the Outstanding Field Event Athlete honors on the women's side, while Henigman wins that award on the men's side. Each of the three set school records this winter, and each also set Big Sky regular season and championship meet marks.
Rudy, a freshman from Woodland Park, Colo., qualified for the NCAA Championships with the 11th-best vault in the nation this spring. Henigman, a senior from Bridger, set an all-time league mark in automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Jones-Graf, a senior from Harlowton, won the both Big Sky Pentathlons in which she competed, 2004 and '06, and fell just short of qualifying for the NCAA meet.
Junior Steve Heberly (Havre) earned MSU Outstanding Track Athlete honors on the men's side. He finished second in the Big Sky 200 meters, setting a school record in both the prelims and finals. Carrie Gottschalk lands Outstanding Track Athlete honors on the women's side after finishing third in the Big Sky 5,000 and eighth in the 3,000.
Heberly and Jones-Graf won MSU's Top Gun Awards as their teams' top point producers. Heberly's 95 points narrowly edged thrower Jess Allen's 94 points. Jones-Graf scored 135 points, while freshman sprinter Autumn Domitrovich scored 82.
Domitrovich captured Outstanding Freshman honors on the women's side. She finished eighth in the Big Sky 400. Matt Beamer, a freshman from Casper Kelly Walsh who had never competed in track before this winter, grabbed Outstanding Freshman honors on the men's side. He finished 11th in the 5,000 meters at the Big Sky meet.
Henigman's eight-foot improvement in the weight throw landed him Most Improved honors on the men's side. Ashley Jones, who improved five feet in the weight throw, and Gottschalk, who improved nearly a minute, share Most Improved honors.
