Men’s Basketball

The Bobcat men used a 14-0 second half run to down Sacramento State 75-70 in the final home contest of the regular season Monday night. The win assured the Bobcats a hosting spot in Saturday’s quarterfinal round of the Big Sky Tournament. Sacramento State returns to Worthington Arena Saturday at 2:35 pm for a rematch to decide which team moves on to the next round of the BSC tourney hosted by Northern Arizona March 7-8.
On Senior Night, it was fitting that senior Al Beye scored seven of his 16 points during that 14-0 run in the second half, and led the Bobcats to their first conference victory in six games. MSU bench players outscored starters 40-35, with three players in double figures: Derrick Edmonds (16), Jacques Wilson (11) and Ted Morris (10).
The MSU men dropped two road games last weekend by a combined 57 points, making for the worst road swing for the Bobcats since the Big Sky Conference was formed in 1963. The 34-point loss at EWU was only the fifth time in Bobcat history the men have lost by more than 30 points.

Montana State fell just short twice over the weekend at home. With the two close losses, the women failed to qualify for the Big Sky Conference tournament for the second consecutive year. Junior guard Alyssa Nelson notched a combined 40 points for the two games and freshman Jenny Herringer added 20 total points in the two contests.

On a strong last round performance by Kelly Gillum, the Bobcat women went from tenth to sixth place after the final round of the Red Rocks Invite in Sedona, Ariz. Three Bobcats made drastic improvements in the second and final round. Kylie Anderson posted her best round of the spring, a 77, after Saturday's 82, which was also an improvement over MSU's opening tournament a week ago. Stephanie Simmons improved by seven strokes, to 77, as well. The team's sixth-place finish is its best of the 2005-06 season. Bobcat golf plays host to two events this week in Goodyear, Ariz., hosting Weber State and Montana in a warm-up event on Saturday, March 4 to the March 6-7 Bobcat Desert Classic.

2/23-24: Placed sixth overall at NCAA Regional Qualifier at Lake Tahoe, California
The Montana State ski team has qualified six racers for the 2006 NCAA Championship, March 8-11 in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Leading the Bobcats will be transfer Spela Bertoncelj who posted five top ten finishes in slalom and GS during the season. Cory Harris will represent the alpine skiers on the men’s side. Four Nordic racers will head to Colorado in March including senior Mandy Bowden, freshman Claire Rennie, seniors Mark Iverson and Chris Coe. The Bobcats finished 13th at last year’s NCAA Championship.
Last week, the MSU ski team notched its highest RMISA Championship/NCAA Western Regional finish since adding a men’s team four years ago. The Bobcats placed sixth overall, behind the strength of the women’s nordic contingent and the men’s alpine squad.

Women’s tennis dropped two matches on the road last week; a 0-7 contest at Missouri and a 2-5 decision to Minnesota on Saturday. Against Minnesota, MSU captured its two points at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Senior Katy Clarke defeated UM’s Jenna Tellefsen 6-3, 6-3, while freshman walk-on McKenzie Hilmer downed Shelby Rohrer 6-3, 6-3.
The men and women are both in action this week against local rival MSU-Billings and conference foe Eastern Washington. This is EWU’s first conference match of the season.

2/24-25: Men and Women placed fifth overall at Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships
Individually, the Bobcat track squad registered record performances at the Big Sky Conference championships last week. However, their team effort fell short of expectations, as the men and women placed fifth overall in the championships. Highlights of the individual performances included freshman Ellie Rudy winning the pole vault championship with a school and league record vault of 13-5.75. Senior Erin Jones-Graf claimed her second pentathlon title. Josh Henigman dominated the weight throw with a winning throw of 68-1.75, winning his second Big Sky Championship and his first indoors. Steve Heberly finished second in the 200 and set a school record time at 21.59. Brad Benjamin's 5,094 heptathlon points stands as a school record, as well.
