The loss eliminated the Bobcat women from the Big Sky Conference tournament for the second consecutive season.
“I’m proud of the way our kids battled in the second half,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We never gave up. However, it was our old nemeses of rebounding and shot selection that proved to be the dagger.”
Trailing 36-21 at intermission, Montana State (3-21, 2-10) went on a 24-9 run to open the second half and tied the score at 45-all with 10:38 remaining following an Alyssa Nelson three-pointer.
Eastern Washington (11-14, 5-7) built a four-point cushion, before Montana State answered to tie the score at 51-all with 6:47 left on an Anne Phippard free throw.
EWU’s Ashley Knight converted a layup with 5:40 remaining and the Eagles never relinquished the lead. MSU closed to within 55-54 at the 3:56 mark on a Phippard trey, but would get no closer.
Montana State was led by Nelson with a team-high 15 points, while Jenny Heringer added ten points, four assists and three steals.
Eastern Washington was paced by Felice Moore with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
For the game, EWU shot 37 percent from the field and converted 21-of-27 free throws, while MSU hit for 34 percent and connected on 15-of-19 from the line.
The Eagles held a 46-32 advantage in rebounding. MSU was led under the boards by Nelson with five rebounds.
Montana State will close out its 2005-06 season at Weber State on Thursday and Idaho State on Saturday.
