Montana State Skiers Notch Highest RMISA Championship Finish

Colorado, who has dominated the second half of the RMISA season, won the team title with 577 points, followed by New Mexico 547, Denver 533, Alaska-Anchorage 465.5, Utah 373, Montana State 345, Nevada 336.5, Western State 226.5, Whitman 216 and Boise State 66.
MSU upended host Nevada, who is ranked in the top 10 by Ski Magazine.
“We’re getting hot at the right time of the year,” said MSU alpine coach Dan Brelsford. “Next up is the NCAA championships and we’ll look to improve upon last year’s finish.”
The Bobcats finished 13th in the nation, last winter.
On Friday, Montana State was led by Mandy Bowden and Claire Rennie, who finished 15th and 16th, respectively in the 15-kilometer freestyle event. They were followed by Korie Steitz, 28th, Ine Fahle, 32nd, Fraiser Opel, 34th, and Karoline Teien, 37th.
In the men’s 20-kilometer freestyle race, the Bobcats were led by Chris Coe and Mark Iverson, who placed 19th and 20th. Also contributing for MSU were Nathan Park, 23rd, Mike Gleason, 30th, and Tim Downey, 34th.
Cory Harris had the best finish for the Bobcat alpine squad, finishing 11th overall in the slalom with a two-run total of 1:17.19. He was followed by Tyler Smedsrud, 20th, 1:21.69; and Robbie Massie, 33rd, 1:33.90.
Spela Bertoncelj guided the MSU women, placing 17th in a time of 1:23.11. She was followed by ChiChi Williams, 22nd, 1:24.82; Crystal Wright, 29th, 1:28.14; and Gretchen Glaser, 31st, 1:28.24.
The Bobcats will learn later who has qualified for the 2006 NCAA Skiing Championships held in Steamboat Springs, Colo., March 8-11.
