Bobcat Men, Women in Thick of Track Title Chases

Josh Henigman knows it only takes one, and he hit the big throw Friday to win the Big Sky Conference weight throw championship.
"I felt alright today," Henigman said after his winning throw of 68-1.75, "but my big throw felt great." Henigman, the league's top weight thrower throughout the indoor season, won his second Big Sky Championship and his first indoors. In so doing, the senior from Bridger, Mont., extended MSU's dominance in the 35-lb weight throw.
Three different Bobcats have won titles in the last five years, a run broken up only by NAU's Karim Chester, the 2004 and '05 winner. Henigman is the only man in league history to toss the weight 70-feet.
Senior Erin Jones-Graf (Harlowton) joined Henigman on the winner's platform on Friday, claiming her second Big Sky Pentathlon title. Jones didn't reach the 4,000-point plateau, her goal for the meet, but was pleased with her title.
"It's a great feeling to win the pentathlon in my last Big Sky indoor meet," said Jones, who also won the title in 2004 before redshirting last year. "To win the pentathlon, then the heptathlon last spring and now the pentathlon again, feels great."
Nathan Palmer picked up some surprise points for the Bobcats in the weight throw, finishing third. The sophomore ranked fifth entering the meet. "You never know where you'll pick up some points," Kennedy said. "Nathan's performance was huge for us."
Five Bobcats join Jones-Graf and Henigman as All-Big Sky performers. Kylee Zent (third, shot put, 46-8.25), Carrie Gottschalk (third, 5000, 18:20.03), Nathan Palmer (third, weight throw, 56-8.75), Thomas Seeley (third, pole vault, 15-4.5), and the men's Distance Medley Relay squad (third, 10:37.88) each earned All-Big Sky honors.
The day was not without its setbacks for MSU. Only two Bobcats advanced through the prelims to Saturday's sprint finals. Freshman Autumn Domitrovich qualified in the 400, while Steve Heberly made it through in the 200 with a school record mark. Steve Heberly and Ty Norris failing to make the 400 finals and Dan Johnson and Norris missing the 200 finals could prove costly in the team's pursuit of MSU's first men's indoor championship, Kennedy said.
Montana State is locked in a donnybrook in the men's race. Four teams enter Saturday's final day within five points of MSU's league-leading 35. MSU's women are tied for third with Idaho State at 33. Portland State has 37, but the rest of the league is watching NAU, with 67 points, fade into the horizon.
