“We gave up some open looks, offensive rebounds and turnovers at crucial times and that was the difference,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “It was a great game, with neither team really taking charge at any point.”
Portland State (11-13, 5-6) built a 29-23 lead in the first half at the 5:11 mark on a pair of Arns charity tosses. Montana State (3-20, 2-9) answered back with a 15-7 run to enter intermission knotted at 38-all.
“Alyssa Nelson had a great game and really gave us a big spark, especially in the first half,” Binford said. “We shot 53 percent from the field, but just didn’t take care of some of the details.”
Nelson, who ended the game with 25 points, recorded 15 in the first half on 6-of-8 from the floor.
In the second stanza, MSU took its largest lead at 47-42 with 16:50 remaining on a Nubia Garcia layup. The score changed hands seven times, before the Vikings took the lead for good at 64-63 with 10:02 remaining on a Brianna Thompson jumper.
The Bobcats closed to within 85-82 with 31-seconds left, following a pair of Jenny Heringer free throws, but the Vikings countered converting 3-of-4 free throws to seal the win.
Also in double-figures for Montana State were Scotta Morton 15, Heringer 10, and Garcia 10. Whitney Connolly paced MSU under the boards with eight rebounds.
PSU was also guided by Kelsey Kahle with 19 points, Thompson 18 points and nine rebounds and Sharon Wahinekapu 10.
The Bobcats will close out its home season on Saturday against Eastern Washington at 2:05 p.m.
