Connolly Gets Bobcats First Road Win

The win snapped MSU’s 10-game road losing streak and kept the Bobcats in the hunt for a Big Sky Conference playoff spot.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the way the team played,” said MSU first-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We got down by ten points, called a timeout, and then made a decision to get the job done. I thought we did a nice job executing, especially with the ball screens.”
Trailing 47-35 with 15:40 remaining in the game, Montana State (3-19, 2-8) went on a 16-4 run to tie the score at 51-all with 11-minutes left on a Connolly layup.
The Bobcats took their largest lead of the game at 67-60 with 5:31 remaining following a pair of Jenny Heringer free throws. Sacramento State (8-15, 3-9) answered with a 12-4 run to take a 72-71 advantage at the 2:04 mark on a Lindsay Calmettes layin.
Connolly’s three-pointer with 29-seconds remaining tied the game at 75-all to force the extra period.
Montana State’s Alyssa Nelson opened overtime with a pair of free throws and the Bobcats would not relinquish the lead.
In all, five Bobcats scored in double-figures. Also contributing for MSU were Heringer 15, Nelson 13, Nubia Garcia 11 and Scotta Morton 10.
Sacramento State was paced by Ashley Cadotte with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
The Hornets held a commanding 55-37 advantage in rebounding, including a whopping 28 offensive boards. The Bobcats countered shooting 49 percent from the field and converting 23-of-32 free throws.
MSU was led under the boards by Morton with eight rebounds.
“We’ve got to do a much better job rebounding, especially on the offensive glass,” Binford said. “We can’t give our opponents 28 second chances. However, if we can clean that area up, I think we’re playing pretty good basketball.
“We’re setting our sights on making the Big Sky tournament,” Binford said.
Montana State will host Portland State on Thursday in Worthington Arena.
