Bobcat Skiers Sixth at Western State Invite

Colorado captured its second straight RMISA win with 600 points, followed by defending national champion Denver 556, New Mexico 527, Utah 450, Nevada 412, MSU 344, Western State 296, Alaska-Anchorage 205, Whitman 173 and Boise State 62.
Bowden completed the course in 16:12.7. She was followed by Claire Rennie, 13th, 16:50.9; Fraiser Opel 26th, 18:07.9; Ine Fahle, 32nd, 18:51.8; and Karoline Teien, 34th, 18:55.6.
Jana Rehemaa of Colorado won the women's title in 15:20.3.
The Bobcat men's Nordic squad was paced by Mark Iverson, who finished tenth overall in the10K race in a time of 28:41. He was followed by Nathan Park, 17th, 29:06; Mike Gleason, 22nd, 29:32; Chris Coe, 23rd, 29:37; and Tim Downey, 28th, 30:29.
Rene Reisshauer of Denver won the individual crown in 27:08.1.
In the women’s five-kilometer classic race on Saturday, the Bobcats were led again by Bowden, who finished 18th overall in 19:57. She was followed by Teien, 20th, 20:05; Fahle, 27th, 20:44; Rennie, 28th, 20:47; and Opel, 31st, 21:10.
MSU was paced by Coe in the 10K men’s classic event, finishing tenth in 31:39. He was followed by Downey, 21st, 32:54; Park, 23rd, 33:02; and Gleason, 33rd, 35:39.
In the Alpine races, the Bobcats received its best performance from Spela Bertoncelj in the women’s giant slalom. The Boise State transfer finished seventh overall in a clocking of 2:39.48. She was followed by Chi Chi Williams, 15th, 2:41.57; and Gretchen Glaser, 39th, 2:56.95.
Crystal Wright led MSU in the women’s slalom event, placing 23rd in a time of 1:21.73. Also contributing for the Bobcats were Williams, 27th, 1:23.47; Glaser, 33rd, 1:25.45; and Bertoncelj, 44th, 2:30.64.
The Montana State men received its best showing from Robbie Massie in the slalom race. The Wayzata, Minn., native placed 16th overall in a time of 1:14.85. He was followed by Cory Harris, 23rd, 1:16.62; Tyler Smedsrud, 23rd, 1:19.56; Don Brockett, 30th, 1:21.05; Dan McKay, 33rd, 1:22.95; Christer Kjos, 35th, 1:23.46; and Eric Behan, 37th, 1:27.46.
In the men’s giant slalom, the Bobcats were led by McKay, 20th, 2:31.36; Harris, 21st, 2:31.38; Smedsrud, 25th, 2:33.34; Massie, 28th, 2:34.09; Kjos, 30th, 2:34.58; Chris Newey, 32nd, 2:35.52; and Brockett, 39th, 2:47.79.
MSU will compete at the 2006 NCAA Western Regional, Feb.23-24 in Lake Tahoe, Calif.
