Grizzlies Race Away from 'Cats in Second Half

Montana’s efficient offense and a nearly-four minute dry spell midway through the second half doomed Montana State on Saturday, as the Grizzlies earned a 70-61 win in Missoula.
Casey Durham and Derrick Edmonds led the Bobcats with 11 points each, Durham adding six rebounds and three assists. Montana State shot 38% on the night, and just 35% in the second half. Montana’s 52% second half shooting spelled the difference.
The game’s key moment came after Al Beye’s short basket at 10:20 gave the ‘Cat a 46-45 lead. MSU failed to score for nearly four minutes, breaking the spell on Marvin Moss’ basket at 6:23. In that time Montana scored on seven straight possessions, a 16-3 run that all but sealed the game.
“The separation happened right there before the eight minute mark in the second half,” said Bobcat coach Mick Durham. “(Kevin) Criswell hit a big three, we missed the front end of a one-and-one, and that was where they got on their spurt.”
Criswell’s three-point dagger came at the 9:08 mark, and broke a 46-46 tie. Matt Martin’s tip-in and a Mike Chavez three gave Montana control of the game.
“They went on a run,” said Bobcat guard Ja’Ron Jefferson. “They hit some open threes when we doubled down on Strait. He found the open guys and they knocked them down.”
Strait scored only 11 points, but grabbed a team-high seven boards and dealt three assists. Jordan Hasquet scored 15 points, and Kevin Criswell 18.
The teams traded runs in the first half. The Grizzlies jumped to a 12-4 lead, but the ‘Cats answered with a 7-0 run to trim the lead to one. Marvin Moss gave the Bobcats their first lead since 2-0 at 21-19 at 8:09. A pair of close buckets by Ja’Ron Jefferson and a triple by Derrick Edmonds allowed MSU to build a 28-22 lead, but during a four-minute MSU dry spell allowed Montana to grab a 29-28 lead on Kevin Criswell’s basket with just under two minutes left. Carson Durr closed the first half scoring with a three at 52 seconds.
