“I’m behind this team 100 percent and I’m proud of the way they competed,” said first-year head coach Tricia Binford. “Anne Phippard did a nice job and Whitney (Connolly) really had a great game.
“Now, we’ll ask for them to do that from here on out.”
Connolly led Montana State (2-18, 1-7) with 16 points, while Alyssa Nelson and Jenny Heringer added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Montana (16-5, 5-3) was paced by Katie Edwards with a game-high 20 points, including a 6-of-8 effort from three-point range.
In the first half, the Bobcats stayed with the Lady Griz, trailing 12-11 following a Katy Proietti 12-foot jumper at the 12:05 mark. The Proietti bucket was part of a 7-0 MSU run.
Montana answered rattling off a 9-4 run to go up 21-15 at the 7:58 mark. UM took its largest lead of 13-points with 1:10 remaining in the opening stanza, before the Bobcats closed the gap to 41-32 at intermission.
Connolly paced the Bobcats with 13 points in the opening stanza on 6-of-8 from the field. MSU also out-rebounded the Lady Griz 17-16 in the first half.
For the game UM out-rebounded MSU 42-35. The Bobcats shot 41 percent from the field and went 14-of-16 from the free throw line.
Montana hit at a 43 percent clip, while converting 11-of-21 from long distance.
Montana State will be at Northern Arizona on Thursday.
