Henigman, Rudy Lead Bobcats

There’s no question in Josh Henigman’s mind that his record-setting toss in the 35-lb weight throw last week wasn’t his best.
“There’s more there,” Henigman said modestly this week, following his second historic weekend of the season. Henigman’s mark of 70-6, which won the weight throw competition at the Mountain States Games in Pocatello, stands as the longest in Big Sky Conference history in the weight throw. It also passes the NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark, earning the Bridger native automatic entry into the March 10 national championship meet in Fayetteville, Ark.
Henigman broke the MSU school record for the second time this season in the weight throw, and also earned Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week honors for the second time. Henigman’s teammate Ellie Rudy, a freshman pole vaulter, also earned league kudos for the second time, posting the Big Sky’s best pole vault mark ever at 13-4.5. Rudy is a freshman from Woodland Park, Colo.
A senior from Bridger, Henigman became the first Big Sky student-athlete in history to break the 70-foot mark in the weight throw. “Josh really had a phenomenal weekend,” said Bobcat head coach Dale Kennedy. “He and Ellie are performing at a level that this school hasn’t seen in a number of years. In fact, for this point in the indoor season, I’m not sure we’ve ever had a male and a female perform like this.”
Kennedy said the performances mean more than just names on the top of a record list. “These kind of performances really have the effect of raising the expectations for everyone in the program,” he said. “It stretches everyone out a little taller, and gives kids the feeling that they can achieve things they never thought possible.” Henigman stands sixth in NCAA Division I in the men’s weight throw this week, while Rudy is fifth in the women’s pole vault.
The Bobcats compete this weekend in duals against Weber State, Idaho State, and Utah Valley at Pocatello.
