Late Bucket Gives Portland Win Over Bobcat Hoopsters

Montana State (3-4) setup a play with 2.9 seconds left, but couldn’t get a shot off.
“We didn’t get the stops when we needed them,” said second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We didn’t knock down the open look, and that’s uncommon for us this season.”
The Bobcats started the game with a 15-4 outburst in the initial six minutes.
However, Portland (5-4) countered with a 22-5 run to grab a 26-20 advantage at the 5:34 mark on a Laiken Dollente three-pointer.
The Pilots entered intermission with a 34-30 lead.
In the second stanza, Portland built a 42-34 cushion with 16:02 left on a Rachel Warren basket.
MSU chipped away at the lead, and a pair of Alyssa Nelson free throws with 1:03 remaining gave the Bobcats is first lead of the final period.
Nelson led Montana State with a team-high 14 points, while Nubia Garcia also reached double-figures with 11.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 33 percent from the field, including 28 percent in the second half. In addition, MSU converted only 3-of-18 from three-point range.
Portland shot 43 percent for the game, including 46 percent in the second stanza.
Montana State held a 43-37 advantage in rebounding. The Bobcats were paced under the glass by Krislyn Wallace with ten rebounds.
UP was led by Thomas with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. Entering the game, Thomas was averaging 6.3 points and 4.7 rebounds, respectively.
“We’re not going to stress over the loss,” Binford said. “We had a chance. We just need to get over the hump, and put together back-to-back games.”
