Montana State (5-7) got off to a slow start, trailing Gonzaga (8-8) 21-4 at the halfway point of the opening period following a Maria Hassett layup. MSU cut the margin to 33-23 with 2:39 remaining on Nubia Garcia free throw. The Bulldogs held a 39-27 margin at intermission.
“We got off to a slow start,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “When that happens, we need to do a better job finding another way to get it done.”
In the second half, GU built a 45-28 advantage, before the Bobcats went on a 12-6 run to cut the deficit to 51-41 with 11:01 left on a Garcia free throw.
MSU would get no closer.
“I thought our post defense was improved, and that certainly is a positive to take away from this game,” Binford said. “Gonzaga is a good team. They used their size and strength. We need to do a better job focusing on our strengths.”
The Bobcats were paced by Garcia and Alyssa Nelson with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Gonzaga was led by Heather Bowman with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
For the game, MSU shot 33 percent from the field, and converted only 14-of-25 free throw attempts. In addition, the Bobcats committed 26 turnovers.
Gonzaga hit for 48 percent from the field and went 17-of-20 from the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs held a narrow 40-38 advantage on the boards. Montana State was led under the glass by Whitney Connolly and Krislyn Wallace with five rebounds, apiece.
MSU will open its Big Sky schedule on Thursday, Jan. 4, when it hosts Eastern Washington in Worthington Arena.
