“Our post defense is something we have struggled with all season, and certainly an area of concern,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “I also thought we were lethargic and lacked energy. We just weren’t focused.”
Montana State (5-6) was paced by Alyssa Nelson and Rebecca Mercer with 17 points, apiece. Nelson also added seven assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Also hitting double-figures for the Bobcats were Krislyn Wallace 11, Anne Phippard 11 and Whitney Connolly 10.
“Anne came off the bench and gave us some energy, but we needed everyone on the same page,” Binford said. “We just didn’t get the job done.”
Utah Valley State (10-3) held a 45-38 advantage at intermission, after shooting 45 percent from the field and connecting on 18-of-23 free throw attempts.
In the second stanza, the Wolverines built a 47-38 lead, before the Bobcats tied the game at 62-all with 7:50 left on a Whitney Connolly three-pointer.
UVS answered and reestablished its lead at 81-71 with 1:10 remaining on a pair of Hollie Beaman free throws. MSU fought back scoring seven straight points in 30-seconds to cut the deficit to 81-78 with 41-seconds remaining on a Nelson trey.
Fairbanks hit three free throws in the final 38-seconds to secure the win.
In all, Fairbanks connected on 14-of-19 from the field and 15-of-18 from the line.
UVS held a 40-37 advantage in rebounding. MSU was paced under the boards by Wallace with ten rebounds. The Bobcats also committed a season-high 30 fouls.
Following its holiday break, MSU will travel to Gonzaga on Dec. 30.
