Wyoming (6-1) found themselves down 27-15 at the 6:46 mark of the opening stanza, following a pair of Nick Dissly free throws. However, the Cowboys responded with a 16-4 run to enter intermission 31-all.
“We got off to a great start, and we haven’t done that this season,” said MSU first-year head coach Brad Huse. “We did a nice job with their pressure. We just weren’t ready to sustain the level of play for the entire game.”
Brandon Ewing recorded 23 points, including a 10-of-11 effort from the free throw line, to pace four Cowboys in double-figures. Also reaching double-digits were Joseph Taylor 16, James Spencer 12 and Chris Anderson 10.
In the second half, Wyoming broke away from a 49-48 advantage with 12-2 run to stake a 61-50 lead on a Ewing field-goal. UW converted 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
Montana State (2-6) was paced by Carlos Taylor with 20 points, while Carson Durr and Nick Dissly added 16and 13 points, respectively. Durr, a senior from Roberts, connected on a season-high four-of-eight from three point range.
“I liked our performance,” Huse said. “We need to have the consistency for an entire game. The guys are starting to figure it out, and they showed a lot of heart and character.”
For the game, the Bobcats shot 43 percent from the field, while the Cowboys hit at a 57 percent clip. UW also held a 31-24 rebounding advantage. MSU was led under the boards by Adrian Zamora with a team-high four rebounds.
