Connolly came off the bench to connect on 7-of-14 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers. Also in double-figures for Montana State (5-5) was Alyssa Nelson with 14 points.
The Bobcats built a 17-13 lead with 4:06 remaining in the first half, before Utah (6-5) went on a 12-2 run to take a 25-19 advantage at intermission.
In the second stanza, the Utes took their largest lead of the game at 47-37 with 11:08 left following a Morgan Warburton layin.
MSU fought back to take a 55-54 lead with 3:58 remaining on a Brandie Buckless jumper. The score was tied four times down the stretch, before a pair of Halie Sawyer free throws with 29-seconds remaining gave Utah 63-61 advantage.
The Utes converted three-of-four from the line in the final seconds to secure the win.
“We keep taking steps forward, but now we need to learn how to handle the last few minutes of a game,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “I’m proud of the way our kids fought, and got back in to the game. We need to cut back on our mental mistakes.”
For the game, the Bobcats shot 42 percent from the field, including a blistering 52 percent in the second half.
Utah held a commanding 44-28 advantage in rebounding. MSU was paced under the boards by Krislyn Wallace with nine rebounds. The Utah native also chipped in nine points for the Bobcats.
UU was paced by Joh-Teena Filipe with 24 points and five rebounds.
MSU will play at Utah Valley State on Wednesday afternoon in Orem.
