Bobcat Spikers Rally Falls Short to Wildcats

“I’m proud of the way our kids played,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “We played tough and battled over the course of the match.
“We had a big lead in game three, and Weber State fought back and served three match points. Historically this season, we would’ve folded our tent, but we wanted it tonight and we did a great job competing, and forced the match to five games.”
Montana State (7-18, 3-11) was paced by sophomore Laura Viren with 20 kills and 20 digs. Also in double-figure kills were Kim Stonehouse 18, Angela Wiebe 16 and Raelene Purnell 15. Wiebe and Purnell also combined for 15 blocks.
MSU setter Sarah Allen dished out a team-high 43 assists. Aside from Viren, also in double-digit digs was Patti Anderson with ten saves.
After trailing 2-0, Montana State staved off three match points to win the third stanza. In the fourth game, MSU held a 22-14 advantage and held on for a three-point win.
In the fifth and deciding game, the Bobcats served for match point after an Angela Wiebe block gave MSU a 14-13 margin. Montana State held off a Weber State (7-23, 3-11) match point at 15-14, and the Bobcats served for the match at 16-15. However, the Wildcats scored three unanswered points for the win.
WSU was led by Leah Burmeister with 29 kills and 16 digs.
MSU will close out its season at Portland State and Eastern Washington next weekend.
