Bobcat Women Face Washington State

NEXT UP: The Montana State women’s basketball team will travel to Pullman, Wash., to face PAC-10 foe Washington State, Thursday, Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. (MST) on Friel Court. The Bobcats will return home to host West Coast Conference opponent Portland, Monday, Dec. 4 in Worthington Arena at 7 p.m.
ON THE AIR: All Montana State women’s basketball games will be carried live on My 103.5 FM. Veteran broadcaster Mark Martello will handle play-by-play duties for his second straight season. Martello will begin his broadcast with the Bobcat Pregame Show, originating 15-minutes prior to tip-off.
THE WEEK THAT WAS: Montana State went 1-1 at the Wingate Inn Thanksgiving Classic. The Bobcats opened with an 86-63 win over Cal State Fullerton. Four Bobcats hits double-digits led by Whitney Connolly, who came off the bench to notch 21 points and seven rebounds. In its 74-62 loss to North Dakota State, MSU was paced by Rebecca Mercer with 18 points and seven assists.
FAST BREAKS: Montana State recorded its most lopsided victory of the Tricia Binford era with an 86-63 win over Cal State Fullerton...with the end of November looming, the Bobcats just need one victory to match last year’s total of three wins...in its win over the Titans, MSU shot 53 percent from the field, including a 61 percent (19-31) effort in the second stanza...numerous Bobcat players recorded positive numbers during the tournament, including sophomore Nubia Garcia, who averaged 13.5 points and 5.0 rebounds, while shooting 79 percent from the field. Garcia also went 3-of-3 from three-point range, and her trey against CS Fulerton was the first of her career...senior Alyssa Nelson was named to the all-tourney team after averaging 11 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals over the weekend...Nelson recorded a career-high five steals vs. North Dakota St...Whitney Connolly sparked MSU against CS Fullerton with a game-high 21 points, coming off the bench. She also added seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and an assist vs. the Titans.

Washington State (1-4 overall)
Washington State is 1-4 overall, with its lone victory over Big Sky Conference foe Sacramento State (79-65) two weeks ago. The Cougars have dropped games to nationally-ranked Kentucky, Wake Forest, Portland and Santa Clara
Last weekend, in its 67-56 loss to Portland, WSU was paced by Marisa Stotler with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Against Santa Clara, the Cougars were again led by Stotler, a 6-1 freshman forward, with 25 points and ten rebounds.
Washington State holds a 14-12 advantage in the all-time series; however, the Bobcats have won the last three meetings, including an 81-55 win on Nov. 25, 2002. WSU’s last win came in 1989.
The Cougars are under the direction of former Portland State assistant Sherri Murrell, who is in her fifth year at WSU.
Note: Current MSU assistant coach Amy Saneholtz played at Washington State from 1992-97 and finished 15th on the all-time Cougar scoring chart. She also holds the single-game rebounding record with 22 boards against Arizona State. Saneholtz’ mother Marcia is the Senior Associate AD and Senior Women’s Administrator at Washington State.
Portland (4-3 overall)
Portland is 4-3 overall, after dropping a 73-46 decision to Oregon on Tuesday. The Pilots will face Montana on Saturday, before making the trip to Bozeman. UP is led by Laiken Dollente, a 5-8, fr., who is averaging 16.2 points and 2.7 rebounds. Also in double-digits is Rachel Warren, a 6-3, jr., at 12.5 ppg and 7.8 rpg.
Coach Jim Sollars is in his 21st year at UP.
