MSU Game Notes vs. Appalachian State
11/29/2006 12:00:00 AM | Football
When Montana State travels to North Carolina to face Appalachian State on Saturday (2 pm MST, ESPN2), it won’t find the situation completely unfamiliar. The Bobcats played a first-round playoff contest at #1 McNeese State in 2002, and are 1-4 all-time against top-ranked foes. MSU’s win against #1 came in 1993, when Cliff Hysell’s second Bobcat team raced past Idaho 40-35 in Bozeman. The Bobcats’ only visit to a Southern Conference Stadium before this week came in the 1984 National Championship game, a 19-6 win over Louisiana Tech in The Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Kory Austin returned an EWU punt for a TD that was called back.

20 is Terrific
Montana State is 26-6 in Mike Kramer’s seven seasons when holding the opponent to less than 20 points.

THE QUOTABLE KRAMER
On the Furman game: “I don’t think I can overstate how well we played defensively, and the offense and kick teams made big plays. Our crowd was fantastic, and I thought we really responded to the atmosphere in a positive manner. It was a great day for our program, and I hope everyone in Bobcat Nation enjoyed it as much as our coaches and players.”
On Appalachian State: “Appalachian State is a fast team that really reminds me of West Virginia on offense. They have great speed, and it starts with their quarterback Armanti Edwards. Their I-back, Kevin Richardson, can really boogie and Willie Mayfield is an outstanding receiver. They have a quarterback that’s thrown for nearly 2,000 yards, a 1,000-rusher, and almost a 1,000-yard receiver. That’s exactly what you want when you’re building an offense. Defensively it’s more of the same, they’re very fast. They’re smaller, and they play all man, but they’re very solid and really run to the ball.”
On the Bobcats: “This is a great challenge for us. Our receiver corps will be healthy and ready to go, and that is a plus. We had some young guys step up and make contributions last week, and that’s what the playoffs is about, getting contributions from everywhere. You also need to make big plays to have success in the playoffs, and we need big plays from our receiving corps against Appalachian State’s man-to-man coverage. Defensively, we need to contain their big-play guys. We are a team with a good sense of solving the problems posed by opposing offenses, and that’s how we will approach this game. We have become a methodical, matter-of-fact team that solves problems as they come our way. I don’t anticipate that changing this week.”
