Marcel Jones scored 24 points and Oregon State forced 21 Bobcat turnovers as the Pac 10 Beavers topped Montana State 72-63 in Bozeman on Sunday.
Jones' performance overshadowed an outstanding day by MSU forward Nick Dissly, who scored 22 points with three steals and three assists. Dissly and MSU center Ted Morris, who grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, combined to shoot 14-for-20 from the field and score 36 of MSU's 63 points. The rest of the team shot 10-for-37 from the field.
"We have guys thinking a little too much and not reacting," said MSU coach Brad Huse. "There are lots of areas you can point to after a game like this. Our execution in the last five minutes is pretty frustrating, especially how we played coming out of time outs."
Oregon State led by as many as 16 points in the second half, and led 61-49 with 5:11 to play. Layups by Morris and Dissly and a three-pointer by Casey Durham whittled the lead to five points with 2:45 to play. The 'Cats had the opportunity to narrow the lead further when Ted Morris blocked Wesley Washington's shot on the ensuing possession, but after an offensive rebound Seth Tarver hit a jumper and then Marcel Jones scored on OSU's next time down the floor to expand the lead to nine and effectively end the game.
"I want to see us execute more effectively," Huse said. "Whether it be substitutions or frustration or fatigue or whatever, we play well at times but all of a sudden have only four of the five executing at once and you can't be successful that way."
Oregon State shot 54% on the afternoon, and out-rebounded MSU 36-to-29.
Montana State travels to Fresno State on Wednesday night, and hosts Wyoming in Billings next Saturday.
