North Dakota State Muscles its Way to Victory

Jerri Penley, a 6-2 center, paced the Bison with 16 points, while Brenda Slyt and tournament MVP Lisa Bue added 15 and 13, respectively.
North Dakota State (2-2) held a commanding 50-38 advantage under the boards.
“It was strength over speed,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We struggled with our post play.”
In a game filled with runs, North Dakota State got out early taking a 15-10 lead following a Slyt jumper. Montana State (2-3) responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead 20-15 following a Jamie Thornton basket with 6:40 left in the first stanza.
NDSU held a 32-27 advantage at intermission.
“It took us awhile to get going,” Binford said. “We lacked energy, but I’m happy with the way we battled to the end.”
In the second half, the Bison stormed to a 49-36 lead following a Penley free throw with 14:09 left. MSU cut the margin to 57-53 with 7:28 remaining on an Alyssa Nelson layup. However, the Bobcats would get no closer.
MSU was paced by Rebecca Mercer with 18 points, including a 7-of-7 effort from the free throw line. Also in double-digits were Nubia Garcia and Nelson with 14 points, apiece.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 32 percent from the field, while the Bison hit at a 45 percent clip, including a red-hot 54 percent in the second stanza.
“We continue to take steps in the right direction,” Binford said. “Our challenge now is to put together back-to-back games.”
Montana State will travel to Washington State on Thursday night.
