Montana State Harriers Announce Award Winners

Carrie Gottschalk, a junior from San Marino, Calif., was named the women’s Top Gun award recipient, while senior Kurt Michels and freshman Nick Atwood shared the men’s honor.
The Top Gun award goes to the student-athlete who scores the lowest amount of points- which in cross country is a good thing.
Gottschalk finished first for the Bobcats at the 2006 Pre-Nationals and the 2006 NCAA Mountain Region Championship.
“Carrie was our most consistent runner,” Kennedy said. “We knew, and could count on her to be at the top of our line-up.”
Michels, who transferred to MSU as a junior from the University of Utah, finished first for the Bobcats at the Pre-Nationals and NCAA Mountain Region meets. Atwood, a native of Otis Orchards, Wash., was Montana State’s top performer at the Montana Invitational, while finishing second on three occasions.
“We had a bunch of guys take turns being at the front of our pack,” Kennedy said. “However, Kurt and Nick established themselves as the most consistent.”
In addition, Kennedy named the program’s most improved performers.
Elisabeth Driscoll garnered the honor for the Bobcats women, while Graydon Curry earned the award for the MSU men.
“People might be surprised that Elisabeth was our most improved, but she started out as our No. 3 runner and ended as our top finisher at the Big Sky meet,” Kennedy said. “Graydon was in our 6-7 spot and ended as our third kid at the NCAA Mountain Regional.”
