“We have a new team and it took awhile to get going,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “However, the sign of a good team is that on any given night, someone can step forward, and I’m very happy with the way we responded.”
MSU-Billings jumped out to a 23-9 advantage at the 5:07 mark on a Michelle Lieber layup. Montana State closed out the last five-minutes of the first half with a 15-8 run to cut the margin to 31-24 at intermission.
“We got the opening game butterflies settled down at half, and we really got running in the second,” Binford said. “Erica Perry was our spark-plug tonight, and Whitney Connolly helped us out after struggling in the first half.”
The Bobcats opened the second half with a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 35-33 following a Nubia Garcia layin. Montana State took its first lead with five minutes remaining on a Connolly three-pointer.
With the score tied at 63-all, MSU closed out the game on a 12-6 run sparked by seven points from freshman Erica Perry.
Junior college transfer Rebecca Mercer led four Bobcats in double-figures with 15 points on 5-of-8 from the field. Also hitting double-digits were Garcia 14, Connolly 12, and Perry 10.
MSU was led under the boards by Garcia with eight rebounds, while Krislyn Wallace added five. Both Garcia and Perry recorded a game-high four steals. Senior Alyssa Nelson led both squads with six assists.
For the game, Montana State shot 46 percent from the field and 46 percent from three-point range. The three-point line was extended 20-feet, six-inches as part of the NCAAs experimental trial during exhibition games.
MSU-Billings was paced by Alira Carpenter with 24 points and six rebounds.
Montana State will open regular season play when it hosts Montana Tech, Nov. 12.
