“This is a great win for us, especially after what happened last week,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “Long Beach State has a history of being a very successful program, and to come in here and overcome a second half deficit speaks volumes of our improvement.”
Montana State (1-1) was led by the old and the new.
Senior Whitney Connolly notched 17 points on seven-of-eight from the field. She completed the double-double with a team-high ten rebounds, to go along with three blocked shots.
Junior college transfer Rebecca Mercer also recorded 17 points, while adding six assists.
“It was a total team effort,” Binford said. “You can go right down the line and make a comment about how everyone contributed and stepped-up.”
Also in double-figures for Montana State was the backcourt tandem of Alyssa Nelson and Erica Perry, with 11 and ten points, respectively.
After trailing by 12-points in the second stanza, consecutive baskets by Connolly and Nelson gave MSU a 52-50 advantage. A Mercer three-pointer put the Bobcats in front 61-59 and secured the victory.
Long Beach State (0-3) was paced by Lauren Sims with 20 points and six rebounds.
For the game, MSU held a 42-32 advantage in rebounding.
“Rebounding is an area that we’re putting a lot of emphasis on, and it’s starting to payoff,” Binford said. “I also liked the fact that at the end of the game, we still had plenty left in our tank.”
MSU ended the night shooting 52 percent from the field, including a whopping 64 percent in the second half. The 49ers were limited to 38 percent from the floor, and 30 percent from the field in the second half.
LBS held a 38-32 lead at intermission.
MSU will play at Oregon State on Sunday at 5 p.m. (MST).
