UCSB Rides Fast Start to Big Win

UC Santa Barbara scored on its first nine possessions and rode a 19-1 game-opening outburst to an 88-56 win over Montana State on Monday.
"It was a classic deal of trying to stop one leak and another springing," Bobcat head coach Brad Huse said. "We tried to focus yesterday in practice on the offensive end, and we saw tonight that our transition defense wasn't there."
Chris Devine spurred UCSB's game-opening run by scoring eight of the team's first 12 points. Devine finished with 12 points and five rebounds on six-for-eight shooting before fouling out. Alex Harris scored 21 points. The Gauchos shot 58% from the field.
Huse said the hole in which MSU found itself after four minutes was daunting. "The psychology of it is demoralizing," Huse said, "when you look up after the first couple of minutes and see the score. That has an effect."
Casey Durham got untracked offensively in the absence of senior forward Nick Dissly, who missed Monday's game with a sprained ankle suffered Sunday in practice. The junior guard scored a team-high 13 points and hit three three-pointers. Erik Rush and Carlos Taylor each scored 10 points, as well. "I'm happier with the offense," Huse said. "I think we saw improvement in that area."
The Bobcats played well in stretches during the second half. After falling behind 67-33 with 13:28 to play, MSU went on a 12-2 run spurred by youngsters Danny Piepoli and Erik Rush. Huse was pleased with several elements of his team's play. "There were some bright spots, some teachable moments," he said. "It's a long season."
The Bobcats fall to 0-2 on the season, also losing last Friday at Utah Valley State by 32 points. The loss was MSU's biggest in Worthington Arena since UC Santa Barbara beat the Bobcats 80-48 on December 21, 1971. UCSB is 2-0. The Bobcats play at Portland on Friday night.
