MSU’s current six-game winning streak is the longest at Montana State since the 1984 squad won its last 10 games to win the I-AA National Championship. Saturday’s contest marks only the third time in the Division I-AA era that the Bobcats and Grizzlies square off with each team occupying a spot in the national polls. MSU has won three of the last four outings against Montana, including two wins in Bozeman and one in Missoula in 2002, when the ‘Cats topped the Griz 10-7.

The MSU spikers finished their 2006 season with two tough road losses. Despite a team-high ten kills from Raelene Purnell, the Montana State volleyball team dropped a 0-3 decision to Eastern Washington, Thursday night. Senior Kim Stonehouse recorded a team-high 15 kills in her final match as a Bobcat, but it wasn’t enough as Portland State defeated MSU, 1-3, Saturday night in the Stott Center. Saturday night’s match marked the final performance for four Bobcats seniors: Kim Stonehouse, Angela Wiebe, Kami Buettner, and Kandice Kelly.

The MSU cross country squad finished their 2006 season last week. Montana State junior Caroline Gottschalk had the best race of her season, finishing 33rd overall at the 2006 NCAA Mountain Region Championships, Saturday afternoon at the University of New Mexico Golf Course. The native of San Marino, Calif., covered the 6-kilometer course in a time of 22:02.4. Noticeably absent from the MSU women’s top seven was Elisabeth Driscoll. The Bozeman native who garnered All-Big Sky honors two weeks ago was sidelined with an illness and did not compete. The Bobcat women finished 14th overall with 361
The Montana State men’s team, who entered the race with aspirations of finishing in the top ten, had an equally tough day. Senior Kurt Michels paced the Bobcats placing 40th overall, covering the 10-kilometer race in 32:06.3. He was followed by Matt Adams, 50th, 32:32.4; Graydon Curry, 63rd, 33:07.5; Nick Atwood, 70th, 33:28.9; Devin McDowell, 77th, 33:49.8; Matt Beamer, 78th, 33:50.8; and Michael Kapus, 96th, 34:59.2. MSU placed 13th overall with 300 points, finishing ahead of Montana 373 and Idaho State 443.

News
Montana State added front-line depth Wednesday, signing two in-state prep athletes during the early fall signing period. Great Falls High standout Bobby Howard and Butte High star Jeff Edwards signed National Letters-of-Intent to join the Bobcat program on Wednesday, the first day of a one-week fall signing period.

The ‘Cats host UC-Santa Barbara Monday night at 7:05 p.m. UC-SB opened their 2006-07 season with a 75-67 win over visiting San Jose State. The Gauchos placed fifth in the Big West last year. MSU continues their non-conference season on the road at the University of Portland and the University of Idaho. Portland opened their season with three losses at the Oregon State Invite, losing to the host, Cal-Poly and Southeastern Louisiana. The Pilots compete in the West Coast Conference. Last year, MSU beat Idaho at home, 71-65. The Vandals lost their season opener to North Dakota State, 76-91.

11/10: lost at Utah Valley State, 69-37
Montana State dropped its season opener at Utah Valley State on Friday. The veteran Wolverines, featuring a host of returners from last year’s squad, held MSU to 26% shooting, including just 2-of-20 from three-point range, forced 22 Bobcat turnovers, and out-rebounded MSU 41-to-34.
Senior center Ted Morris was the only Bobcat in double-figures scoring, getting 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Morris tied Casey Durham for team honors with nine rebounds, a career-high for Durham.
Women’s Basketball (0-1, 0-0)
Montana State women’s basketball coach Tricia Binford has signed two Washington high school standouts to national letters-of-intent. Sarah Strand, a 6-1 forward from Seattle, and Lyndi Seidensticker, a 6-foot guard from Spokane, both inked with the Bobcats during the early fall signing period.

The Bobcats leave for their first road trip of the 2006-07 basketball season this week. The first stop is Long Beach State. The 49ers are coming off two non-conference losses, one to USC and one to San Jose State. Next, the Bobcats travel to Oregon State. MSU lost their last meeting with the Beavers, 70-35.

11/12: lost to Montana Tech, 66-57
Montana Tech handed the Montana State women’s basketball squad a 66-57 setback in the season-opener for the Bobcats. Montana State was led in the loss by senior Alyssa Nelson with 16 points and six steals. MSU was led under the glass by Garcia with a team-high nine rebounds. For the game, MSU shot 36 percent from the field, while Montana Tech hit at a 47 percent clip. Tech also held a slim 38-36 advantage in rebounding.
