Diggers Bury Bobcats Women’s Hoops Opener

Rebecca Gimeno notched a game-high 19 points and ten rebounds to pace the Oregdiggers.
“We had prepared well the entire week, but when it came time to play we weren’t ready,” said second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We need to identify why we didn’t come ready. We need to do a much better job of preparing ourselves, mentally.
“Montana Tech wanted it more.”
Montana State (0-1) opened with a 14-11 advantage following a Jamie Thornton basket at the 12:03 mark of the opening stanza. Montana Tech (4-1) responded with a 14-4 run to stake a 25-18 lead on a Jenessa Todd layup.
Montana Tech entered intermission with a 36-26 margin.
“We need someone to take charge, especially when the other team goes on a run,” Binford said. “Our defense wasn’t very good.”
In the second half, the Orediggers took their biggest lead at 51-35 with 11:40 remaining following a Stephanie Langford free throw.
Montana State chopped the margin to 59-51 with 4:37 left on a Nubia Garcia lay-up. However, the Bobcats would get no closer.
Montana State was led in the loss by senior Alyssa Nelson with 16 points and six steals. MSU was led under the glass by Garcia with a team-high nine rebounds.
For the game, MSU shot 36 percent from the field, while Montana Tech hit at a 47 percent clip. Tech also held a slim 38-36 advantage in rebounding.
In addition to Gimeno, Todd and Natalie Shaw also reached double-figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
