Gottschalk Shines in Tough Afternoon for Bobcat Harriers

The native of San Marino, Calif., covered the 6-kilometer course in a time of 22:02.4. Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech won the women’s individual crown in a time of 19:45.9
“Carrie finished in the mid 40s at last year’s region race, so this is a significant improvement,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “It was her best race of the season.”
Noticeably absent from the MSU women’s top seven was Elisabeth Driscoll. The Bozeman native who garnered All-Big Sky honors two weeks ago was sidelined with an illness and did not compete.
“Not having Elisabeth Driscoll in the line-up had a dramatic effect on what we were able to accomplish,” Kennedy said.
The Bobcat women finished 14th overall with 361. Colorado won the team title with 64 points, followed by Texas Tech 87, BYU 94, Colorado State 96 and Weber State 98.
Other finishers for MSU included Ashley Hadway, 55th, 23:01.7; Kayla Larson, 79th, 23:32.2; Marilee Woyth, 96th, 24:14.3; Leah Thompson, 109th, 24:53.4; and Elena Gibson, 112th, 25:11.9.
The Montana State men’s team, who entered the race with aspirations of finishing in the top ten, had an equally tough day.
Senior Kurt Michels paced the Bobcats placing 40th overall, covering the 10-kilometer race in 32:06.3. He was followed by Matt Adams, 50th, 32:32.4; Graydon Curry, 63rd, 33:07.5; Nick Atwood, 70th, 33:28.9; Devin McDowell, 77th, 33:49.8; Matt Beamer, 78th, 33:50.8; and Michael Kapus, 96th, 34:59.2.
“We didn’t have our typical pack run,” Kennedy said. “We set some goals heading into the race that we didn’t accomplish and it’s disappointing.
“We have to use this experience for the future,” Kennedy added. “I thought Graydon Curry had the best race of his season, and that’s exciting.”
Josh Rohatinsky of BYU won the men’s title in 29:51.6. Colorado also captured the men’s team title with 59 points. The Buffs were followed by BYU 67, Texas-El Paso 86, Southern Utah 128, and Northern Arizona 160.
MSU placed 13th overall with 300 points, finishing ahead of Montana 373 and Idaho State 443.
