Bobcats Hold Off Minot in Exhibition Opener

The Bobcats jumped out to a 12-3 lead and never looked back en route to a 78-63 exhibition win over Minot State. Nick Dissly led all scorers with 26 points, and the Bobcats converted 16 of 19 free throws in the second half.
"We got off to a really good start," said Brad Huse after his first game as Montana State's head coach. "In cases like that you've got to keep doing what you're going."
The Bobcats out-rebounded Minot State 41-to-30 and forced 19 Beaver turnovers, and Huse said he liked how his predominantly new club - nine of Wednesday's 13 varsity player weren't on the squad last year - handled the game's ups and downs. "There were lots of ebbs and flows, some frustration, some real bright spots," he said. "We have lots of work to do offensively, we were out of sync at times. Defensively I thought we were pretty gritty."
Dissly keyed MSU's quick start with eight of team's first 10 points. Casey Durham's three-pointer at 8:49 pushed MSU's lead to 11 at 20-9, but Ricky Martinez hit a three at 2:13 to cut the lead to five, and Minot trailed only 33-27 at halftime.
The second half followed much the same script. After the Beavers pulled to within four at 38-32, MSU used a 12-2 run to take a 50-36 leead on Branden Johnson's layup. The Beavers chopped the lead to seven several times, the last at 6:27 on a pair of Patrick Beck free throws, but salty free throw shooting and a timely three-pointer by Branden Johnson helped MSU cruise to the win.
While Dissly paced the Bobcats in scoring, three newcomers joined him in double-figures. Junior college transfers Carlos Taylor (19) and Adrian Zamora (11) each got in on the act, as did redshirt freshman Branden Johnson. Johnson had 11 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Beck led the Beavers with 17 points. Milan Cvetkovic grabbed five boards.
Montana State returns to action on Sunday, November 5, in a game originally scheduled for November 6, hosting Western State of Colorado.
