Eagles Fly Past Bobcat Spikers

Eastern Washington (9-7, 2-5) out-hit Montana State (6-9, 2-4) .242 to .189 and held a sizeable 81-51 advantage in kills, as well.
“We were on the roller coaster,” said MSU fourth-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “We would get up, lose the lead, regain the lead, lose the lead, etc. We didn’t have any consistency with our play.”
The Bobcats were guided by sophomore outside hitter Laura Viren who posted a team-high 20 kills, while hitting .242 and adding nine digs and two blocks. Viren had 13 kills in the final two games for the Bobcats.
Also in double-digit kills was Kim Stonehouse with ten. Defensively, libero Kandice Kelly tied a match-high with 24 digs, while Patti Anderson had 15 saves. Raelene Purnell recorded a match-high five blocks.
“Laura carried us tonight; however we need more than one kid to step-up,” Malauulu said. “We played with heart last Saturday, and now we need to find that again this Saturday against Portland State.”
Montana State opened the match taking an 8-2 lead following an Anderson kill. EWU answered staking a 20-19 advantage after a Bobcat ball-handling error. With the game tied at 25-all, the Eagles closed out the stanza on a 5-1 run, winning on a Chrystal Johnson kill.
In the second set, the Bobcats held an 8-6 lead, before Eastern Washington went on a 5-0 run and never relinquished the lead.
The Bobcats started the third game cruising to a 13-6 margin, before the Eagles pulled to within 23-21. Viren posted four kills down the stretch to give MSU the victory.
In the final set, MSU held a 17-16 lead after a Stonehouse winner. Eastern Washington went on a 7-3 run taking a 23-20 margin. With the scored tied at 24-all, EWU scored three unanswered points lifting the Eagles to a 27-24 lead. Montana State pulled to within 27-26 following a Purnell and Stonehouse block, but Eastern Washington rattled off the final three points for the match.
Montana State will host Portland State on Saturday night.
