Dissly Leads Way in Blue-Gold Scrimmage

Forwards Nick Dissly and Branden Johnson each scored 23 points and Adrian Zamora added 21 to pace Montana State in its Blue-Gold Scrimmage in Worthington Arena on Friday.
The Bobcats shot 51% in the 40-minute scrimmage covering four 10-minute periods. That was both the good news and the bad, said first-year head coach Brad Huse. "I thought we shot the ball pretty well," Huse said. "Unfortunately, that means we were leaving some guys open. I hope we shoot the ball well in that situation."
Dissly, a senior forward who has started most of the past two seasons, showed a broad offensive skill set in amassing his 23 points. He was 3-for-5 from three-point range, 4-for-5 inside the arc. His penetration led to seven free throws, and he converted six. Johnson, who redshirted last year, also showed an inside-out game, scoring five baskets down low and hitting four three-pointers.
"We continue to evolve with what we're doing offensively," Huse said. "We can't become too one-dimensional."
Johnson was one of a handful of freshmen that performed well. Mark Desin, a redshirt receiver on the Bobcat football team who joined the basketball squad a week ago, dished out four assists. Athletic swing players Erik Rush (13 points), Jonathan Malloy (11), and Danny Piepoli (8) each showed the ability to score. Junior college transfer guards Carlos Taylor (7) and Mecklen Davis (9) combined for 16 points, while seniors Casey Durham (four assists, three steals) and Ted Morris (six rebounds) contributed in other ways.
Huse said the coaching staff and players return to work Saturday in preparation for the team's exhibition opener on November 1 against Minot (N.D.) State. "We'll break the tape down and see where we're at. We'll start looking at rotations and things like that."
