Bobcat Spikers Face Final Home Stand

FINAL HOME SHOW:
The Montana State volleyball team will host its final home contests of the 2006 campaign with three consecutive matches in Shroyer Gym. The Bobcats will host Northern Arizona, Thursday, Oct 26 at 7 p.m. MSU will celebrate ‘Senior Night’ on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., against Big Sky Conference newcomer Northern Colorado. Prior to its match with the Bears, the Bobcats will honor four seniors: Kami Buettner, Kandice Kelly, Kim Stonehouse and Angela Wiebe. Montana State hosts a non-conference match on Halloween against South Dakota State, Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
REWRAPPING THE WEEK THAT WAS:
Montana State dropped a pair of Big Sky Conference road matches, last weekend. The Bobcats opened play against undefeated Sacramento State. The Hornets handed the Bobcats a 30-27, 30-28, 30-19 setback. MSU held leads in the late going in the opening two sets, only to fall down the stretch. Senior middle blocker Angela Wiebe was the only Bobcat to reach double-digit kills against the Hornets with 11 winners. In addition, the Winnipeg, Manitoba native led MSU with a .308 attack mark, while chipping in five blocks. Defensively, Montana State had three players in double-figure digs, including Laura Viren 13, Kandice Kelly 12 and Allyce Bebensee 10. On Saturday night, MSU’s rally fell short as Idaho State won a hard-fought 31-29, 30-25, 17-30, 24-30, 15-12 decision over the Bobcats. Again, MSU held leads in games one and two, before falling in the final stages of each set. Laura Viren recorded a team-high 19 kills (her second highest output of the fall), while hitting .306 and adding 17 digs, three blocks and two aces. Also in double-figure kills were Wiebe 12, Kim Stonehouse 12 and Patti Anderson 11. Defensively, five Bobcats notched double-digit digs, including Kelly 30, Viren 17, Bebensee 12, Anderson 12 and Sarah Allen 12. Wiebe and Kami Buettner recorded seven and six blocks.
THE SCOUTING REPORT:
Northern Arizona enters Thursday’s match with an 8-12 overall mark and a 4-6 Big Sky slate. The Bobcats defeated NAU 3-1 earlier this season in Flagstaff, marking one of two victories for MSU in league action. The Lumberjacks are on a two-match win streak with victories over Idaho State and Northern Colorado. NAU is led by Kim Babcock, who is averaging 4.29 kills and 2.55 digs per game. Northern Colorado is 10-10 overall and 6-4 in league action. The Bears dropped a 3-2 decision at NAU last Saturday. UNC downed MSU 3-0 in September. The Bears are paced by Dulcie Stone, who averages 2.92 kills and 3.21 digs per game. UNC plays at Montana on Thursday.
TOP ‘CAT:
Senior middle blocker Angela Wiebe has posted three consecutive double-figure kill matches, including 11 against Sacramento State and 12 versus Idaho State. Against the Hornets, the Winnipeg native registered a .308 attack mark and five blocks. On Saturday night, aside from her 11 kills, Wiebe posted a match-high seven blocks and chipped in five digs, as well. In all, Wiebe averaged 2.88 kills and 1.50 blocks per game, while hitting .157 from the floor. For the season, she is averaging 2.14 kills and 1.08 blocks per game.
FROM THE PINE-- (58-48/4YRS, 26-27 BIG SKY):
Miya Malauulu became Montana State’s seventh head coach at the conclusion of the 2002 season. Since then, she has put her own fingerprint on a Bobcat program that has produced four 20-win seasons in the last eight years. Prior to being named head coach, the 1998 graduate of Oregon State University, served as an assistant under Dave Gantt for five seasons. Malauulu came to Bozeman after a successful stint playing for the Beavers. A native of Carson, Calif., she played at OSU from 1994-97. She still holds numerous records at Oregon State and currently ranks fourth all-time in PAC-10 history with 5,368 assists. A two-time OSU most valuable player and an unprecendented four-time Beaver captain, she prepped at Bishop Montgomery High School and played for national club power NIKE-Ichiban, where she garnered USVBA Player of the Year kudos. Malauulu is joined on the bench this season by assistant coaches Lisa Mimick and Erin Naipo. Mimick, a former All-Big XII first-team selection at Kansas State, begins her third season at MSU. She previously served as an assistant coach at SW Minnesota State in Marshall. Naipo, a 2002 graduate of Dartmouth College, was a four-year letterwinner and team captain for the Big Green. She is in her second year at MSU and previously served as assistant coach at Spokane Community College.
2005: A YEAR IN REVIEW:
The Bobcats finished 15-15 overall and 7-7 in Big Sky Conference action. MSU played its toughest schedule in school history, going up against eight teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including eventual national champion Washington. The Bobcats also hosted Missouri and Wisconsin- two squads that advanced to the Elite Eight. Seniors Megan Zanto and Meggie Malyurek concluded their careers, each going over the 1,000 kill plateau. Junior Kandice Kelly became MSU’s all-time digs leader.
CAT TRACKS:
The Bobcats return eight letterwinners from last season, including four starters: Kim Stonehouse, Angela Wiebe, Laura Viren and Kami Buettner...Stonehouse recorded 371 kills and was ranked among the top ten in the Big Sky Conference...Stonehouse was a second-team All-Big Sky pick last season...MSU finished 25th in the nation in attendance, averaging 1,260 fans per game...The Bobcats have been ranked among the nation’s top 40 squads in blocking for six consecutive seasons.
DIGGIN’ IT:
Everytime senior Kandice Kelly steps on the court this season, the Montana State all-time dig records change. Already MSU’s match, single-season and career record-holder, Kelly is also making a move up the all-time Big Sky Conference charts, as well. Earlier this fall against Bradley, the 5-foot-6 libero from Roundup recorded a new match high with 38 digs against the Braves. Last season, she set MSU’s sinlge-season mark with 495 saves. Her current career total of 1,604 is fourth in Big Sky history, while her career average of 4.30 digs per game is fourth best in league lore. Kelly, who is averaging 4.66 digs per game this season, has been in double-digit digs in 17 of 20 matches, including seven +20 dig outings. Kelly posted 30 digs at Idaho State on Saturday night.
PURNELL POWER:
After playing behind all-conference middle blocker Megan Zanto the last two seasons, junior Raelene Purnell has made a smooth transition into a starting role for the Bobcats. The 6-foot-1 native of Red Deer, Alberta, is second on the team in hitting percentage with a .227 attack mark; is second in blocking at .99 per game; and is third in kills and fourth in aces. Purnell recorded a career-high 15 kills against Idaho State on Sept. 23. She has been in double-figure kills on five occasions, and has recorded a hitting percentage of .350 or better six times. Purnell notched 16 kills and ten blocks, last weekend.
SHE’S A STONEHOUSE:
Senior Kim Stonehouse became the 15th member of Montana State’s pretigious 1000-kill club. The 6-foot outside hitter from Medicine Hat, Alberta had 12 kills in one match, and has now totaled 1,041 career winners. On the season, Stonehouse is averaging a team-best 3.19 kills per game, while hitting .176 from the floor. She has been in double-figure kills in 13 of 19 matches, including a career-high 24 kills in Montana State’s 3-1 victory over Lipscomb. Defensively, Stonehouse has posted three double-digit dig matches. She is currently third on the squad with 15 aces. Her career total of 3,061 attacks are fifth best at MSU.
WHEN YOU THINK OF LAURA:
Sophomore Laura Viren had a strong weekend for the Bobcats recording 27 kills and 30 digs. She also chipped in six blocks and two aces. Viren posted a season-best 20 kills against Eastern Washington earlier this fall. On the year, she is averaging 2.68 kills and 2.93 digs per contest. She is first on the team with 20 service aces.
PATTI LOU:
Junior right-side hitter Patti Anderson posted 14 kills in MSU’s two matches last weekend. Anderson, a native of Deer Lodge, matched a career-high 13 kills against Sacramento State. Defensively, Anderson posted double-digit digs with 12 at Idaho State. On the year, she is averaging 1.54 kills and 2.89 digs per game. She is also second on the squad with 17 service aces.
WIEBE BE BLOCKIN’:

Wiebe has posted seven matches hitting .250 or better. An outstanding blocker, she is currently fourth on MSU’s all-time total blocks ladder with 387. Senior setter Kami Buettner has played in 65 of MSU’s 73 games on the season and is averaging 6.63 assists and 1.28 digs per game. The 5-foot-9 native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, posted a season-high 38 assists in MSU’s 3-1 loss to Nevada at the 12th Annual Holiday Inn Classic. Buettner has posted three double-doubles this fall to pace the Bobcat squad. She registered a season-best 12 digs against Wichita State. Last weekend, Buettner combined for 39 assists, five kills, three digs and six blocks.
DISHIN’ THE ROCK:
Junior setter Sarah Allen played all eight games last weekend. She dished out 33 assists and added a career and season-high 12 digs against Idaho State. On the season, the Redmond, Wash., native is averaging 5.84 assists and 1.27 digs per game. Allen recorded a season high 54 assists in MSU’s win over Bradley.
THE SPECIALIST:
Freshman walk on Allyce Bebensee has played in 59 of MSU’s 73 games this season and is averaging 2.15 digs per game. Her total of 127 digs is fourth best on the squad. The 5-foot-7 native of Thornton, Colo., posted a career and season-best 14 digs on two occasions, including against Northern Colorado on Sept. 28. Her first dig mark came in MSU’s 3-1 victory over Bradley at the Arizona-Sheraton Four Points Classic. In addition, Bebensee has recorded ten aces, including three winners against Florida Atlantic to spark the Bobcats to the win over the Owls. Last weekend, Bebensee notched 22 digs (2.8 dpg).
IN-N-OUT BURGER:
Sophomore Kaytlin Van Burger has played in 34 of 73 matches this season. The 5-foot-11 native of Bend, Ore., is averaging 1.29 kills per game. Her .205 attack mark is third best on the squad. Van Burger recorded a career-high ten kills and four blocks in MSU’s win over Bradley. Last weekend, she saw action in Montana State’s matches against Sacramento State and Idaho State. In four games, Van Burger posted four kills, two digs and a block. In all, Van Burger has posted four matches this fall in which she has hit over .400 from the field or better.
GET A GRIP:
Redshirt freshman Nicole Grypiuk has played in 43 games this fall, and is averaging .72 kills per game. Coming off the bench, the 6-foot-1 outside hitter from Shellbrook, Saskatchewan, recorded a season and career-best eight kills against Idaho State, last weekend. Grypiuk also posted a season and career-high two blocks versus the Bengals. Last weekend, she combined for 13 kills and five blocks.
OH HENDRY:
Redshirt freshman Kyla Hendry has been hampered with an injury this season and has seen limited action. The 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Lanigan, Saskatchewan, has played in three matches, including two games against Bradley.
A SHIRT OF A DIFFERENT COLOR:
Three true freshmen are redshirting this season. The trio includes Meghan Albiston, a 5-foot-5 libero from Idaho Falls, Idaho; Wendy Doutre, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Sparks, Nevada; and Maria Peterson, a 5-foot-10 setter from Corvallis, Mont.
PACKIN’ ‘EM IN:
Montana State has been ranked among the top 30 in attendance at the NCAA Division I level for the past five seasons. The Bobcats are on track to remain in the country’s top 30. Currently, the Bobcats are averaging 1,073 fans in Shroyer Gym. Although down from previous seasons, MSU currently ranks No. 30, just behind the Jayhawks of Kansas. Montana State has had seven matches with over 1,000 fans, including a season-high 1,437 in attendance last against Montana. The Bobcats hold the Big Sky and State of Montana all-time volleyball attendance mark of 6,378 fans, set on Nov. 15, 2002 in Worthington Arena.
HIGH IN THE SKY, STATISTICALLY SPEAKING:
In all matches as a team, the Bobcats rank: seventh in hitting percentage (.163), eighth in assists (11.74), sixth in blocking (2.31), eighth in kills (13.25), eighth in service aces (1.25) and third in digs (17.07). Currently, the Bobcats are averaging 1,073 fans in Shroyer Gym. Although down from previous seasons, MSU currently ranks No. 30, just behind the Jayhawks of Kansas. Montana State has had seven matches with over 1,000 fans, including a season-high 1,437 in attendance last against Montana. The Bobcats hold the Big Sky and State of Montana all-time volleyball attendance mark of 6,378 fans, set on Nov. 15, 2002 in Worthington Arena.
HIGH IN THE SKY, STATISTICALLY SPEAKING:
In all matches as a team, the Bobcats rank: seventh in hitting percentage (.163), eighth in assists (11.74), sixth in blocking (2.31), eighth in kills (13.25), eighth in service aces (1.25) and third in digs (17.07). Individually, the following Bobcats are ranked among the Big Sky Conference’s best: Assists, Kami Buettner, 8th, 6.63 apg; Blocks, Angela Wiebe, 7th, 1.08 bpg; Kills, Kim Stonehouse, 10th, 3.19 kpg; Digs, Kandice Kelly, 3rd, 4.66 dpg.
