Dear Diary: The Beginning

Hey all you fellow Bobcat fans, welcome to the 2006-2007 season of Montana State women’s basketball! My name is Jamie Thornton and throughout the season you can follow me and the team as I write about our experiences in my player diary.
I’m a freshman on the team this year and I’m just starting to get used to college life. School and basketball are both going great, but they are also so different from what I thought they would be. After 12 years of 8-3 schooling, it’s really weird to only have 2 or 3 hours of class a day.
At first I thought that I would have nearly un-limited free time, but I was sorely mistaken. To make up for the lack of in class time, my professors like to give me lots of things to do outside of class, this leads to many nights and weekends filled with homework rather than fun. But it’s not all bad; I do enjoy the classes I’m taking, even the ones at 9 a.m.
Basketball has been amazing so far. We just finished our first week of real practice, not to say we didn’t do anything before. In fact, that may have been the most shocking thing about my first year of college. I wasn’t nearly prepared for the amount of pre-season conditioning we did. Some days were brutal (400’s, 200’s, stadiums, ect.), but I made it through and am happy to say that we have left pure conditioning behind.
Practice has been hard, but I also feel like I’m learning a lot. We have been putting in some of our transition offense as well as our defensive principles. Some days I feel like I’m really getting it all, then others I realize how much further I have to go. With only nine more practice days until our first game I can’t even imagine how much I have left to learn.
It’s really exciting to think that in only a week and a half we will be starting games. I know it sounds cliché, but I’m really living a dream. Ever since I was the tall, gangly girl in elementary school that just liked to shoot hoops with her dad, I have been dreaming of the day when I would get to put on a college jersey and play in a big arena. I can hardly believe that my dream is almost here. I know I’m ready to see where the 2006-2007 season takes us, are you?
