Bobcats Drop ISU in Holt Arena

Michael Jefferson has had days like this, but it’s been a while.
“Freshman year in high school,” said Montana State’s senior wide receiver after tying the MSU record with five touchdowns, leading Montana State to a nail-nibbling 42-35 win over Idaho State in Holt Arena on Saturday.
“He’s pretty good,” Bobcat coach Mike Kramer said of the stalwart pass-catcher, who caught six passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns. Jefferson also had 67 yards rushing with two touchdowns, and returned a kickoff 31 yards. “We knew when we met Michael all those months ago that he had a chance to be a pretty special player. He’s performing how we thought he could.”
Idaho State jumped to leads of 7-0 and 12-7 in the first half, and led 18-13 midway through the third quarter. On the heels of the Matt Gutierrez quarterback sneak that provided ISU’s last lead, Jefferson caught a 70-yarder from Jack Rolovich to give MSU a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. The Bobcats scored on a safety when a flea-flicker went awry to take a 28-18 lead, then Jefferson scored on a 57-yard end around to put the game away.
Or so it seemed.
“We knew we would take a shot from the Bengals at the end,” Kramer said. “They are too well-coached, they care about each other too much.”
Gutierrez scored two quick touchdowns, one covering 66 yards over 1:26, the next covering 85 yards in 2:26, to close the gap to 35-32. Then, after gaining possession on the ISU 10 after a four-and-out possession, Jefferson scored his fifth touchdown to give the ‘Cats a 42-32 lead. ISU closed the gap with a field goal with seven seconds remaining.
Jefferson said the Bobcat offense saw the possibility of scoring points during the week. “We watched film, we knew if we ran the right routes, if we executed, if the O-line gave Jack time, that we could do this.”
For his part, Rolovich posted his second straight spectacular start. The junior threw for 323 yards on 16-for-27 passing, with three interceptions and one touchdown. In all, the Bobcat offense churned out 436 yards, while ISU rolled up 403, most of that on the final three desperation drives in the fourth quarter.
Kramer said the win, and the manner in which the ‘Cats won, was not surprising. “We’re pretty mentally tough. Our swoon in September is offset by the way we’re playing right now, especially on the road. Matt Gutierrez is pretty good, they caught us in some bad calls, and they made it close.”
