Montana State (6-11, 2-6) was paced by Patti Anderson and Kim Stonehouse with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Anderson, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Deer Lodge, matched her career-high in kills and posted her second double-double of the season, notching a team-high 17 digs.
“I was proud of our effort,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “The kids fought the whole match and showed a lot of heart. Sacramento State is undefeated in the Big Sky, and our kids competed point-for-point.”
Montana State opened the match getting off to a 14-12 advantage following an Anderson kill. MSU held a 27-23 lead, before the Hornets answered with a 5-1 run to tie the score at 28-all. A Kami Buettner ball-handling error and a Haupt kill gave Sacramento State (20-4, 8-0) the win.
Sacramento State cruised to a 22-12 lead in the second set as the Bobcats struggled to terminate the ball. However, MSU out-scored the Hornets 10-8 down the stretch, before losing the game on a hitting error.
In the final stanza, MSU owned a 21-17 margin following a Stonehouse winner. Sacramento State went on a 10-2 run to take a 27-23 advantage. The Hornets won the match on a Haupt kill.
Aside from Anderson’s 17 digs, libero Kandice Kelly notched double-digits with 15 saves. Junior middle blocker Raelene Purnell recorded a match-high six blocks, while setters Sarah Allen and Buettner dished out 23 and 14 assists, respectively.
