HOME SWEET HOME, PART II:
For the second consecutive weekend, the Montana State volleyball team will host a pair of Big Sky Conference matches inside the friendly confines of Shroyer Gym. The Bobcats will open the weekend against league-leading Sacramento State on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. MSU will conclude weekend play with the annual ‘Cat-Griz clash on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Prior to the start of the Montana State-Sacramento State match, a special presentation will be held to honor former Bobcat Megan Zanto as the school’s all-time blocks leader. Zanto finished her career at MSU ranked first in total blocks and block assists. She is also first in Big Sky history with 511 block assists and third in total blocks with 592.
REWRAPPING THE WEEK THAT WAS:
Montana State dropped a pair of Big Sky Conference home matches inside Shroyer Gym. Eastern Washington handed Montana State a 30-26, 30-24, 24-30, 30-26 setback on Thursday. Sophomore Laura Viren led the Bobcats with a team-high 20 kills, while adding nine digs. Also is double-digit kills was Kim Stonehouse with ten. Defensively, MSU was paced by Kandice Kelly with a match-high 24 digs, while junior Patti Anderson also hit double-figures with 15 saves. Junior middle blocker Raelene Purnell guided all players with a match-high five blocks. Portland State swept the Bobcats 30-21, 30-24, 30-20 on Saturday night. Viren and Stonehouse led Montana State offensively with ten kills, apiece. Senior setter Kami Buettner dished out 23 assists and added nine digs. Anderson and Kelly guided the Bobcats defensively for the second straight night with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. PSU out-hit MSU .215 to .074, and also held a 51-30 advantage in kills.
THE SCOUTING REPORT:
Sacramento State could enter Friday’s match (SAC plays at Montana on Thursday) undefeated in Big Sky Conference action. The Hornets are 18-4 overall and 6-0 in BSC play. Sacramento State garnered ten points in this week’s CSTV/AVCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. On the season, the Hornets have been led by Atlee Hubbard and Lindsay Haupt, who average 3.81 and 3.01 kills, respectively. Middle blocker Michelle Franz paces the team in hitting percentage (.361) and blocks (1.78). Kristen Lutes is the Big Sky’s top libero, averaging a whopping 6.26 digs per game. Montana is 7-9 overall and 4-3 in Big Sky play. The Grizzlies are led this season by senior Claudia Houle, who is averaging 4.36 kills and 3.39 digs per contest. Last month, Montana handed the Bobcats a 3-1 setback in Missoula. MSU owns the all-time series with UM 43-39, including winning four of the last five.
TOP ‘CAT:
Sophomore Laura Viren was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts against Eastern Washington and Portland State. The 6-foot outside hitter from Prior Lake, Minn., averaged 4.29 kills and 2.00 digs per game, while hitting .192 from the floor. Viren recorded a season-high 20 kills in MSU’s four-game loss to Eastern Washington. On the season, she is averaging 2.70 kills and 2.96 digs per outing. Viren has posted six double-digit kill matches on the season, and two double-doubles (K-D).
FROM THE PINE-- (58-44/4YRS, 26-23 BIG SKY):
Miya Malauulu became Montana State’s seventh head coach at the conclusion of the 2002 season. Since then, she has put her own fingerprint on a Bobcat program that has produced four 20-win seasons in the last eight years. Prior to being named head coach, the 1998 graduate of Oregon State University, served as an assistant under Dave Gantt for five seasons. Malauulu came to Bozeman after a successful stint playing for the Beavers. A native of Carson, Calif., she played at OSU from 1994-97. She still holds numerous records at Oregon State and currently ranks fourth all-time in PAC-10 history with 5,368 assists. A two-time OSU most valuable player and an unprecendented four-time Beaver captain, she prepped at Bishop Montgomery High School and played for national club power NIKE-Ichiban, where she garnered USVBA Player of the Year kudos. Malauulu is joined on the bench this season by assistant coaches Lisa Mimick and Erin Naipo. Mimick, a former All-Big XII first-team selection at Kansas State, begins her third season at MSU. She previously served as an assistant coach at SW Minnesota State in Marshall. Naipo, a 2002 graduate of Dartmouth College, was a four-year letterwinner and team captain for the Big Green. She is in her second year at MSU and previously served as assistant coach at Spokane Community College.
2005: A YEAR IN REVIEW:
The Bobcats finished 15-15 overall and 7-7 in Big Sky Conference action. MSU played its toughest schedule in school history, going up against eight teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including eventual national champion Washington. The Bobcats also hosted Missouri and Wisconsin- two squads that advanced to the Elite Eight. Seniors Megan Zanto and Meggie Malyurek concluded their careers, each going over the 1,000 kill plateau. Junior Kandice Kelly became MSU’s all-time digs leader.
CAT TRACKS:
The Bobcats return eight letterwinners from last season, including four starters: Kim Stonehouse, Angela Wiebe, Laura Viren and Kami Buettner...Stonehouse recorded 371 kills and was ranked among the top ten in the Big Sky Conference...Stonehouse was a second-team All-Big Sky pick last season...MSU finished 25th in the nation in attendance, averaging 1,260 fans per game...The Bobcats have been ranked among the nation’s top 40 squads in blocking for six consecutive seasons.
DIGGIN’ IT:
Everytime senior Kandice Kelly steps on the court this season, the Montana State all-time dig records change. Already MSU’s match, single-season and career record-holder, Kelly is also making a move up the all-time Big Sky Conference charts, as well. Earlier this fall against Bradley, the 5-foot-6 libero from Roundup recorded a new match high with 38 digs against the Braves. Last season, she set MSU’s sinlge-season mark with 495 saves. Her current career total of 1,538 is seventh in Big Sky history, while her career average of 4.30 digs per game is fourth best in league lore. Kelly, who is averaging 4.72 digs per game this season, has been in double-digit digs in 14 of 16 matches, including six +20 dig outings.
PURNELL POWER:
After playing behind all-conference middle blocker Megan Zanto the last two seasons, junior Raelene Purnell has made a smooth transition into a starting role for the Bobcats. The 6-foot-1 native of Red Deer, Alberta, leads the team in hitting percentage with a .222 attack mark; is second in blocking at .90 per game; and is fourth in kills and aces. Purnell recorded a career-high 15 kills against Idaho State on Sept. 23. In all, she has been in double-figure kills on five occasions, and has recorded a hitting percentage of .350 or better six times. In addition, Purnell notched a season-high eight blocks vs. Lipscomb.
SHE’S A STONEHOUSE:
Senior Kim Stonehouse became the 15th member of Montana State’s pretigious 1000-kill club over the weekend. The 6-foot outside hitter from Medicine Hat, Alberta had 20 kills in two matches, and has now totaled 1,011 career winners. On the season, Stonehouse is averaging a team-best 3.28 kills per game, while hitting .182 from the floor. She has been in double-figure kills in 11 of 16 matches, including a career-high 24 kills in Montana State’s 3-1 victory over Lipscomb. Defensively, Stonehouse has posted three double-digit dig matches. She is currently third on the squad with 14 aces. Her career total of 2,955 attacks are fifth best in MSU history.
WHEN YOU THINK OF LAURA:

PATTI LOU:
Junior right-side hitter Patti Anderson posted seven kills in MSU’s two matches last weekend. Anderson, a native of Deer Lodge, recorded four kills and a .211 attack mark against Portland State. Defensively, Anderson posted two double-digit dig matches, combining for 28 total saves. On the year, she is averaging 1.32 kills and 2.89 digs per game. She is also second on the squad with 15 service aces.
WIEBE BE BLOCKIN’:
Senior middle blocker Angela Wiebe has played in all 58 games for the Bobcats this season, and is averaging 1.98 kills and 1.05 blocks per game, while hitting .196 from the floor. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, she has been in double-figure kills on two occasions this fall, including a career-best 16 kills in Montana State’s 3-1 victory at Northern Arizona. Wiebe has posted six matches hitting .250 or better. An outstanding blocker, she is currently fourth on MSU’s all-time total blocks ladder with 369. Her career 344 block assists are fourth best at Montana State, as well. Wiebe notched a career match-high ten blocks against Portland State in 2003.
BITS ON BUETTNER:
Senior setter Kami Buettner has played in 52 of MSU’s 58 games on the season and is averaging 6.98 assists and 1.40 digs per game. The 5-foot-9 native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, posted a season-high 38 assists in MSU’s 3-1 loss to Nevada at the 12th Annual Holiday Inn Classic. Buettner has posted three double-doubles this fall to pace the Bobcat squad. She registered a season-best 12 digs against Wichita State. Last weekend, Buettner posted 57 assists (8.14 apg), three kills, 13 digs and a block.
DISHIN’ THE ROCK:
Junior setter Sarah Allen played in only one game on the weekend. She dished out four assists and added two digs and a service ace against Eastern Washington. On the season, the Redmond, Wash., native is averaging 5.69 assists and 1.00 digs per game. Allen recorded a season high 54 assists in MSU’s win over Bradley at the University of Arizona-Sheraton Four Points Classic.
THE SPECIALIST:
Freshman walk on Allyce Bebensee has played in 47 of MSU’s 58 games this season and is averaging 2.13 digs per game. Her total of 100 digs is fifth best on the squad. The 5-foot-7 native of Thornton, Colo., posted a career and season-best 14 digs on two occasions, including two weekends ago at Northern Colorado. Her first dig mark came in MSU’s 3-1 victory over Bradley at the Arizona-Sheraton Four Points Classic. In addition, Bebensee has recorded eight aces, including three winners against Florida Atlantic to spark the Bobcats to the win over the Owls. Last weekend, Bebensee notched 15 digs and two aces.
IN-N-OUT BURGER:
Sophomore Kaytlin Van Burger is receiving more playing time as the season progresses. The 5-foot-11 native of Bend, Ore., is averaging 1.41 kills per game. Her .197 attack mark is third best on the squad. Van Burger recorded a career-high ten kills and four blocks in MSU’s win over Bradley. Last weekend, she saw action in Montana State’s matches against Eastern Washington and Portland State. In three games, Van Burger posted three kills, all coming against the Eagles. In all, Van Burger has posted three matches this fall in which she has hit over .400 from the field.
GET A GRIP:
Redshirt freshman Nicole Grypiuk has played in 31 games this fall, and is averaging .52 kills per game. Coming off the bench, the 6-foot-1 outside hitter from Shellbrook, Saskatchewan, recorded a season and career-best three kills against Arizona. Grypiuk also posted a season and career-high two blocks versus Bradley. Last weekend, she saw limited action, registering one kill and one block.
OH HENDRY:
Redshirt freshman Kyla Hendry has been hampered with an injury this season and has seen limited action. The 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Lanigan, Saskatchewan, has played in three matches, including two games against Bradley.
A SHIRT OF A DIFFERENT COLOR:
Three true freshmen are redshirting this season. The trio includes Meghan Albiston, a 5-foot-5 libero from Idaho Falls, Idaho; Wendy Doutre, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Sparks, Nevada; and Maria Peterson, a 5-foot-10 setter from Corvallis, Mont.
PACKIN’ ‘EM IN:
Montana State has been ranked among the top 30 in attendance at the NCAA Division I level for the past five seasons. The Bobcats are on track to remain in the country’s top 30. Currently, the Bobcats are averaging 1,021 fans in Shroyer Gym. Although down from previous seasons, MSU currently ranks No. 29, just behind the Jayhawks of Kansas. Montana State has had five matches with over 1,000 fans, including a season-high 1,357 in attendance last against Idaho State. The Bobcats hold the Big Sky and State of Montana all-time volleyball attendance mark of 6,378 fans, set on Nov. 15, 2002 in Worthington Arena.

Currently, the Bobcats are averaging 1,021 fans in Shroyer Gym. Although down from previous seasons, MSU currently ranks No. 29, just behind the Jayhawks of Kansas. Montana State has had five matches with over 1,000 fans, including a season-high 1,357 in attendance last against Idaho State. The Bobcats hold the Big Sky and State of Montana all-time volleyball attendance mark of 6,378 fans, set on Nov. 15, 2002 in Worthington Arena.

In all matches as a team, the Bobcats rank: seventh in hitting percentage (.166), ninth in assists (11.53), sixth in blocking (2.22), eighth in kills (13.03), eighth in service aces (1.41) and third in digs (16.97).
