Bobcats Race Past Bengals

Ja'Ron Jefferson scored 25 points and Marvin Moss grabbed 15 boards to lead Montana State to an 84-72 win over Idaho State in Bozeman on Saturday.
Both players did their most productive work in the second half. Moss grabbed 10 second-half rebounds, while Jefferson scored 17 points after the break. MSU overcame a six-point Bengal lead with 1:01 to play in the first half for the victory, which puts the Bobcats at 2-0 in Big Sky play, 9-7 overall.
Jefferson said the difference for the Bobcats was simple. "In the first half their guys came out and could not miss," said the senior guard. "It seemed like everything they put up went in. We started communicating (in the second half). We boxed out our man and went to the glass."
Most of that second stanza glasswork was done by Moss. "This is the best Marvin's rebounded this year," said Bobcat coach Mick Durham. "He understood that he was getting double-teamed, and he was kicking it out. He grabbed 15 rebounds, and we needed them."
The teams played on even terms throughout the first half, with both teams opening up leads of six before the half ended in a 45-45 tie. The Bobcats held Idaho State to 36% shooting in the first half while shooting a torrid 61% themselves, and ISU turned the ball over only once in the first half.
"They do that," Durham said. "They shoot the ball. Their four main players are going to get their shots. I was just hoping that not all of them would get hot at once."
After a Tim Henry jumper gave Idaho State the lead in the first half-minute of the second half, Montana State took over. Jefferson nailed a three-pointer to give MSU a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Moss hit a three-pointer at 17:46.
With the 'Cats holding a three-point lead at 10:43, Moss hit a layup and free throw, Al Beye made one of two free throws, Derrick Edmonds hit a jumper, and Moss hit a jumper. The 8-0 run covered a 1-for-16 Bengal shooting stretch, and put the Bobcats in control of the game.
"I was happy with how we slowly built the lead," Durham said, citing Casey Durham's 9-for-10 free throw effort. "Casey's free throws were huge down the stretch."
Montana State starts 2-0 in league play for the second straight year, and hosts Montana in Worthington Arena next Saturday at 3:05 pm. The Grizzlies are 12-2 overall, 2-0 in Big Sky play.
