Bobcats Roll Past Weber State

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Nick Dissly scored a career-high 25 points and former Bozeman High teammate Casey Durham dished out 11 assists as Montana State topped Weber State 81-65 to open Big Sky play on Thursday.
Dissly's 8-for-9 shooting stole the show, but his early board work got the Bobcats off to a good start. The junior forward grabbed six rebounds in the first six minutes, boosting a Bobcat team which had been out-rebounded by 22 in the previous three games. "When we rebound it really helps things," said Bobcat coach Mick Durham. "I thought Dissly really set the tone in the first half with his rebounding."
Hitting six of his seven three-pointers, Dissly anchored a balanced offensive attack. "Nick knocked down a couple of shots early," Mick Durham said, "which helped his confidence." Dissly agreed. "I just got in one of those zones," he said, "one of those confident zones. Every shooter is like that."
The Bobcats broke a 13-13 tie at the 11-minute mark when Marvin Moss hit a layup and followed that with a three-pointer. Ja'Ron Jefferson's three points and three free throws stretched the Bobcat lead to 10. The Bobcats led by as many as 14 in the first half, and maintained its double-digit lead throughout the game.
"That's been a long time coming," Mick Durham said of MSU's solid effort on both ends of the floor. "We got in a pretty good offensive rhythm early."
Ja'Ron Jefferson scored 21 points, the third time in the last five games he hit for exactly that many, and Moss had 17 points with six rebounds. The 6-6 senior forward said Thursday's impressive showing was as much mental as physical.
"Coach said he could tell from tipoff we would have a good night because of our energy level," Moss said. "We came out and played hard from the beginning."
Dissly concurred. "With both of us, it's purely mental," he said.
The win extended a career-long trend for Durham. His Bobcats are now 13-3 in Big Sky Conference openers, are 9-0 when opening at home, and 6-1 when playing Weber State in the first Big Sky game of the season. The 'Cats have also won eight of their last 11 after the 0-3 start in Alaska, and with the win cracked the .500 barrier (8-7) for the first time this season.
