“We dug ourselves too deep of a hole in the first half,” said MSU first-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We have got to be ready to play from the opening tip.”
Nelson, a native of Edina, Minn., connected on 11-of-18 from the field, including three 3-pointers. Also in double-figures for Montana State (2-15, 1-4) were Scotta Morton and Jenny Heringer with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
After trailing 36-28 at intermission, Portland State (8-10, 2-3) increased the margin to 45-35 with 17:42 remaining on a basket by Sharon Wahinekapu.
MSU rallied with a 26-15 run over the next nine minutes to take its first lead of the game at 61-60 on a pair of free throws by Amanda DeHaan with eight minutes left. The Bobcats increased their lead to 69-63, before the Vikings went on a 12-4 run to go ahead 75-73 with 2:38 remaining.
Both teams could not convert a field-goal down the stretch, and Morton’s three point attempt as time expired fell short.
PSU was led by freshman Kelsey Kahle with 27 points and ten rebounds, while Jenni Ritter added 15 and Briana Thompson 11.
Montana State won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Portland State 38-30. The Bobcats were paced by Katy Proietti with nine rebounds.
PSU forced the Bobcats into 27 turnovers, while committing 18 miscues.
Montana State will host Idaho State on Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
