Wyoming Corals Bobcat Women; MSU Men Drop Season-Opener

“I’m happy with the way we’re playing this early in the season,” said MSU women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “Our sophomore class did an outstanding job in singles play. They really set the tone for the weekend.”
Montana State (2-3) opened with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, where Nicole Luetolf and Nuria Lozano defeated Wyoming’s (1-0) Amy Senko and Andrea House. Wyoming tied the doubles point at No. 3, before Patricia Chien and Karolina Rowinski staged their comeback at No. 1.
“The doubles point was a crucial part of the match,” Albrecht said. “It could’ve gone either way. I’m happy with the way we responded in singles play.”
MSU quickly took a 2-1 lead in the match as Luetolf and Lozano posted wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. The Cowgirls tied the match as House posted a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Katy Clarke. Jamie Nelson’s three set win at No. 3 gave UW a 3-2 advantage, before the Cowgirls captured the match with a victory at No. 6 singles.
MSU will play Utah State on Saturday.
The Bobcat men’s team opened its 2006 campaign dropping a 7-0 decision to Arizona. The Wildcats captured No. 2 and 3 doubles, before sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets.
“We have a lot of work to do,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “We need to toughen up.”
MSU will play Northern Arizona in its Big Sky opener on Saturday.
